Town of Amite makes history, elects first Black mayor

AMITE CITY, La. —
History was made on the Northshore Tuesday night when the Town of Amite City elected its first Black mayor.

Councilman Walter Daniels had been serving as interim mayor for the last six months but was officially elected by voters, making history.

"It's been a long hard road but as you know, I would like the people to know that I am the mayor for everyone," said Walters. "I am going to do what I can to serve all the people of Amite."
