General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDU is going to have to find things to talk about other than Trump
and his cultists' conspiracy theories.
If we genuinely want to move beyond this and stop torturing ourselves with garbage information, we are the ones that are going to have to take the steps necessary for that. We all know full well that the RWNJ are never going to learn, are never going to change their minds, and are never going to shut the hell up.
But, the great thing is Trump will be leaving the White House and we don't HAVE to listen to them anymore. If they want to lie to themselves about the election, it doesn't matter.
No, there won't be any "coup." There won't be any overruling or ignoring the will of the people. Even if there are minor delaying tactics, like obstructing the GSA, nothing is going to keep Biden from being sworn in on January 20. And the screaming and lying of Trump and his supporters will go on and on, it's true. But what you are seeing and hearing is the noise and chaff of the free flow of (stupid and self-kidding) ideas in a politically-free society, not evidence of any actual danger to Biden's presidency.
Obviously I love DU very much and I'm anxious to see the contribution our site makes to the evolution of our country in the coming years. But- seriously folks- figuratively, but also in so many different ways, we need to put down the crack pipe here.
We've been in an extremely unhealthy, abusive, and far-too-exciting relationship with our President, his supporters and our political discourse for well over four years, now. The fear of that continuing is very strong, and it has a huge impact on our thoughts and behavior. That's the manipulation of Trump's abuse and gaslighting- he makes you think you HAVE to pay attention to him, or ELSE.
We don't. We really, truly don't have to pay any more attention to him. He never did anything effective to begin with, and won't start now. All he's ever done is scream, lie and manipulate.
We must be mindful and remind ourselves continuously that it is OK to let him go. We are safe and it is OK to let him go.
We beat Trump, and it's ok to let him go.

(102,276 posts)I've been here since the start. There is no need to think we can ONLY talk about Trump*. Most of us want nothing more than to talk about policy progress and strategy toward improving our country.
If you doubt that, do a google search for Palin. She was a constant source of discussion as were Cheney and his minions under GW Bush* before. Now, never.

(15,212 posts)At least if any sort of justice is going to be served. Trump, his corrupt family, his enablers, his crazy followers... there's quite a bit of this story left to go.
And even when Trump is gone, Trumpism, sadly but clearly, has deeper roots than we'd have hoped, and will be with us a while. It will be good to take a vacation from Trump occupying so much of our mental landscape, and that is something we should do, but vigilance requires not letting go too much.

I never want to hear any more about this creep until his obituary.

(9,313 posts)We have fights ahead for truly meaningful, transformative change. . . and to push our leaders to talk about what our true goals are, whether or not they are doable now.
Our leaders aren't talking about these things, they are not building support for future wins.
"Our side" has lived in fear of being "too extreme" for WAAAAYYY too long.
It is time to light the flames of real hope in a dream of an an America reinvented.

(22,236 posts)since it's the media who is mainly responsible for Trump getting elected when they gave him so much undeserved attention starting from Day 1 in the Republican Primaries and continuing throughout the following years, giving way more than his fair share of the attention which he thrives on.

I think the Lounge is probably a good place for people who don't want to see discussions about what's happening right in front of us.
Hiding threads by keyword is also a useful function.

(5,164 posts)To talk about when he finally is removed... there already is. But the damage he and his nutcase fascist supporters have done is not going to simply vanish. If you ignore history you may find yourself repeating it.
I guess people can decide what they want to discuss here. I doubt he will vanish, I hope his twitter account is disabled and he is prosecuted but he could easily end up with some other mouthpiece or network to promote his crap.

(135,831 posts)Very insightful and much needed post. I like the crack pipe reference. In that doc The Social Dilemma they talk about how our brains respond to stimuli on social media. I'm afraid that is what happens too often, even to Democrats. It may feel good temporarily to rant about everything that comes out of drumpf's mouth - much of which is intended to draw that very response - but in the long run it is not healthy and does not contribute to resisting him and his "policies" anymore than repeatedly pulling the handle on a slot machine is going to make you rich.
I believe that after a few years, drumpf will be holding his rallies in the parking lot of an abandoned K-mart with a crowd of 150. I hope we won't see posts about whatever idiotic and inane thing he said.
