(14,584 posts)He gives their average voters their fixes (racism, misogyny, hatred for us, generally immoral and entitled, etc.) in a more real and viceral way than anyone else. Decades of "normal" politicians winking and throwing backhanded dog whistles at all of this, they eagerly got behind a full on provocateur.
All these people with their yards and houses littered with Trump shit ... you don't go back from meth to sniffing glue.

(63,221 posts)Bwahaahahaha!
They have no place else to go! It's the republican candidate, whoever they decide to present, or the Democratic canditate. That is their only choice. Trump is over! He isn't going to make it until 2024. The entire Trump family has no place to go but down.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)and that snake Rick Scott that are licking his boots will step in. Ass-kissers like Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz will be pushed aside with aspersions about sexuality (Graham) or ethnic whispers (Cruz). Dont think that there are not people ready to step in Trumps shoes. We need to do a quite evaluation of what happened to a lot of our down ballot races, and we need to become brutal and kill the candidacies of people like Cunningham in North Carolina before those people become our nominee and their hidden secrets become public at the wrong time.

(63,221 posts)However, I don't think any of them will ever have the hold on the people that Trump has had. I don't know why, but people like that, no matter how loathsome, only come around once in a generation, if not longer.
I don't think any of those people that you mentioned will be able to galvanize these people like Trump has, and that's a good thing. I don't even think Trump's children could do it. He was a one off. Fortunately.
He tapped into something with his sick, evil personality that aroused something in a certain demographic and took advantage of it. He exploited the zeitgeist and the rage of the disaffected rural, uneducated, racist hater. They were ripe for it and he was in the right place at the right time. I am not so sure the stars are going to align so perfectly again for the next republican candidates. I don't think they will strike the same chord, even if they speak the same words.
I could be wrong, but for some reason, I cannot see anyone topping Trump's hold on the people he had commanded. Just an instinct. I hope I am right. There is something so primal and so base about Trump, I don't know if anyone could ever quite duplicate it. He's like an untamed animal. In a bad way. He appeals to the absolute worst in people.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)to get the country back on course. I still feel that way today. Over 70 million people, some of them non-racists and on the surface normal voted for that monster, those people are going to be around, some will die, but not enough, some of our voters will also die. We just have to take a fight instead of assume mindset, that is why I am very happy that Democratic Party aligned groups in Georgia are out knocking on doors and meeting people face to face for the runoff election - I know that some here are terrified by that, but we need to use what science and data is telling us about COVID19 risk factors and how to mitigate them - our people should not talk to anyone without wearing a face mask properly and they should religiously practice social distancing at all times, other than that, they need to meet people face to face instead of relying totally on an online presence and tv ads.

(32,820 posts)Once the cult leader is gone they are weakened.
Dotard had that ridiculous NYC mobster bravado, Cruz, deathsantis or cotton cant even come close. They are more like rand paul, outspoken but limp, beige/grey personalities that will not appeal.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)A cult can only have one leader. The others may try to imitate him, but they will never be him and they will never capture the same "magic". I think it's over for them all. Trump is done, and therefore so are the republicans. He has destroyed them completely.
Don't believe me, just watch.
Polybius
(15,522 posts)Their primary voters want him.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)Then what? They will have to move on at some point. Where will they go next? I honestly don't think he will make it to 2024. Not in any shape to run, anyway. That is an inevitability. He is barely holding it together now.
Polybius
(15,522 posts)So maybe Republicans will also push to get him in jail. But then Republicans will go full Tucker in '24. They may get rid of Trump, but they will elect his kind again.

(63,221 posts)People like Trump come along once in a century. He is a despicable creature and I cannot understand his appeal, but for some reason he has captured the hearts and minds of a large segment of the population.
These other people that you mentioned may profess the same exact sentiments, but they do not have what Trump has. I don't think they will appeal to his base in the same way. The cult will follow because they are republicans, but they will never have the same attachment.

(31,261 posts)Given all we have seen, the constant lying, the massive incompetence, putting down troops alive and deceased - over 70 million Americans voted for that monster - we had enough this time to defeat them, but what happens when our internal ideological stresses weaken our numbers?

(24,454 posts)And will be "running" for the next 4 years if he does.
I guess that he just doesn't believe that people are sick enough of him and it's nothing short of a miracle that we actually got him out of office when so many people were totally willing to give him another 4 years, although who knows where he will be and what will be happening within the next 4 years. He may be in poor(er) health, battling legal and civil charges from everything that he has never been held accountable for, etc. It's hard to imagine him being in a good position for him to run again for the Presidency in another 4 years and even less of a chance that a majority in this country will want to do it again, now that he's been rejected and we will have at least 4 years of a "normal" Presidency
But that doesn't mean, of course, that he might not try, because he will persist in his belief that he never lost in the first place and that his second term was stolen from him (he thinks his first term was stolen from him too because of the Mueller Investigation and Impeachment).

(3,786 posts)I also think he'll be facing a VERY different Republican Party in 4 years, one that realizes the damage he has done to them. And a field of challengers who are out from under his thumb and no longer need to swear fealty to him. It wouldn't be a shock to me if he ran in 2024 and DIDN'T GET the nomination. But my money is on him either being dead or in jail.
