There is evidently no limit to crazy

The Dunkin' Donuts drive thru line was long, so I decided to go inside and wait on a short line to pick up some coffee. A middle aged man and woman were ahead of me, and even though everyone was wearing masks and keeping distance, it's absolutely mind-boggling what you can overhear in a few moments.

This man was speaking loud enough for me to hear and he was explaining to his companion that the Sistine Chapel ceiling should be destroyed because "God, Adam and everyone else painted up there was naked". He went on to tell her that "Michelangelo was a pervert who" ... Well, that's as much as I heard before they got their order and were gone.

I'm working online this morning, yet that snippet of conversation just won't leave me. Fanaticism of any flavor is always a danger. But to discuss one of the greatest pieces of art in the world in this manner is beyond some weird religious belief. It's a mentally ill perspective. People like this could be dangerous if they ever attained some position of power. And, assuming he votes, I doubt I'd need more than one guess as to who he voted for.

I guess there's one big lesson I learned from this. No matter what, stick with the drive-thru line at Dunkin' Donuts.

1. Um, there's this giant place where you can see things and buy them. Don't go there, either.

for a long time, basically similar contacts in the corporate world. When I came out into the general populace world I was stunned at what I found. I had always recognized all of the world problems, etc. but I was amazed at the ignorance and bizarre belief structures so many held in the general population. It was a total WTF. ... how can one possibly believe all the crap flying around, how can someone not think!

"You think that people are as up to date, or know as much as you do, and that just isn't the case".

I have said many times, that I am not the smartest person in any given room, but I know some things. It isn't that I think that everyone has the same information, but everyone has ACCESS to the same information that I and most of us here on DU do. What annoys me is that people do not seek it out. I guess as they say, "Ignorance is bliss". I know that I sit there sometimes wishing that I did not know some of the things I know.

One of the first times I remember hearing about the discrepancy was during an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show a long time ago, like in the late 80's early 90's when some educational expert was talking about how 25% of US adults believe the sun revolves around the earth, and something like 30% believed that Magna Carta was some kind of champagne.

I guess information is not difficult to obtain, but thinking critically, knowing how to discern good sources from bad ones, and basic rules of evidence are not taught generally. The advent of right wing media also helped to create a nation of ill informed people.

"So ... just wondering ... what clothes do you imagine God is wearing right now? Armani Suit, or?"

Or

"Seems you never actually seen it or you'd know that while 'man' is naked ... God is definitely not"

I was mocking the whole D'Donut Art Critic's conscious stream, too.

Playing off your question as a Pantheist/Atheist it is comedic to think "God" would be offended by his own creations being naked or clothed. You asking God's pick of designer was a great take and I was happy to note he did wear clothes to go along with the humor. Obscurely however.

I explained to first child about traditional blue for boys and pink for girls.
She thought a minute and then deduced, “Oh, so that’s how they know if it’s a boy or a girl, it depends on what color clothes they are wearing when they are born.”

She got a little smarter as she grew up.

If they had ANY knowledge and understanding, OF THE BOOK THEY PURPORT TO WORSHIP, they would know that the painting was inspired by the depictions in their BIBLE. Adam and Eve WERE NAKED and were not ashamed UNTIL they ate of the fruit of the tree. Ignorance is a huge problem for the progress of human beings. Unfortunately those who want power for the sake of power, understand that knowledge and information is a source of power, so they prefer people to be ignorant like that couple. They can more easily control people who have no context and understanding of history and knowledge. There is nothing inherently shameful about the human body. It is religion and moralism that have created this idea of "perverts". Granted, there are situations of exploitation (child molestation, rape, trafficking, etc...) that are perverse and harmful, but just nude forms in a church based on Biblical mythology? That is some high level ignorance.
