Proposed changes to the disability benefits program look like they are going though in the lame duck session. This was proposed in late 2019 as described here:

Now the word is out that they are going to put this into effect.......... with everything going on they are trying to slip this in "under the radar" and hope no one notices, until the disabled start losing their incomes and probably their lives............
Going to call my Congresswoman and Senators next week... asking you all to do the same.........

(5,801 posts)The proposed rule change was published in the Federal Register...so it's not a piece of legislation, but rather falls within administrative law which doesn't require congressional action? So Pelosi can't stop it? How can it be reversed?
Oh, and just more proof red don is scum.

(11,686 posts)However, you can not tell by looking at me or seeing me just standing there or walking or just having a basic conversation that I have a disability. Since people can not see mine I am considered by some to be milking the system dishonestly. I am unable to work both physically and mentally but I am one of the people who will lose it if they succeed.
SSDI has always been the first Soc-Sec program that they have been wanting destroy. You do not get onto SSDI unless you have worked enough to earn what they call a quarter. I worked 3 quarters before I became disabled enough to not be able to work. So we have people who worked putting into the system that they want to take the money from. Next on the list are retired elderly people who will lose their Soc-Sec.
I am screwed if I lose mine and so will my cats because I will have no choice but to have them put to sleep.

(16,844 posts)It's scary, but I'm nowhere near as worried as I would have been if Joe Biden hadn't won. There's no way in hell it will get through Congress, and anything malicious that Trumpy plans to do to us won't last long. I doubt that he would be able to take away disability benefits on his own, anyway, and Republicans wouldn't allow anything like that to be done, either. They still have two Senate races to try and win, and their chances will be pretty slim if they're associated with some evil plan like this.

(21,563 posts)like you, I am hoping Congress can put a stop to this but it has to be "on their radar" to do so, and needless to say drumpf has turned washington into such a shitstorm I'm worried this simply won't be noticed. that's why i plan on calling my reps office's on Monday
I've asked the persons that tweeted this news if there is any way to stop it and/or if it has to pass congress, but no answer so far.

(16,844 posts)I'll be calling, too. I wouldn't put it past him to do something like this, but he's also been known to use extortion to get what he wants. For instance, maybe he's trying to get the Democrats in the House to go along with that shitty stimulus the Republicans want to pass. If he has the power to cut off people's checks unilaterally, the Democrats might be forced to give in to him. He really needs to go to prison for all the evil he's done. If something isn't done to him, this type of behavior will become commonplace with powerful GOP Presidents in the future.

(11,686 posts)It might get really close to what we fear but I think Joe can pull it off to prevent it.

Dear ,
I am writing to bring your attention to a new rule regarding changes to the Continuing Disability Review process that the lame duck Trump Administration has snuck into the rules of the Social Security Administration, even as President-Elect Biden waits to be sworn into office.
This new rule is nothing less than a cruel and unnecessary attempt to make the Continuing Disability Review process so cumbersome and frequent for disabled Americans, that hundreds of thousands of them will lose their rightfully earned benefits. It should be noted that the United States already has one of the most strict and frequent Disability Review processes in the world. This new rule makes it even MORE restrictive.
This process began in late 2019, when the proposed rule change was opened for public comment. CNN did a piece in early 2020 on this proposed rule, and how disastrous it would be for the disabled community. You can read that here:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/30/opinions/trump-administration-social-security-disability-benefits-cokley/index.html
In the public comment period, 125,550 comments were made, almost all from disabled Americans and their loved ones encouraging this rule to NOT be imposed on American citizens. The comments (i.e. proof of my claim) can be accessed at www.regulations.gov and searching for docket #SSA-2018-0026. When the search results come up, click on "open docket folder" and at the top of the subsequent page click on "View all documents and comments in this docket". OR, you can access the comments directly with this link:
https://www.regulations.gov/docketBrowser?rpp=25&so=DESC&sb=commentDueDate&po=0&D=SSA-2018-0026
My fear is, with all the turmoil happening in Washington right now, this rule will simply go into effect without anyone noticing. So I am encouraging you, , and your staff to familiarize yourselves with this issue. Please either pass legislation to override the implementation of this rule, or encourage the Biden Administration to cancel its implementation. Your disabled constituents do not deserve to be saddled with this unnecessary burden.
You may feel free to contact me by any of the methods below if you would like to discuss further. A reply and acknowledgment would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
