Some friends and I were talking about what Donnie would do when even he came to grips with the fact he lost, and if he would come to the Inauguration. We were all a solid "no", but I mentioned that he couldn't hang around long enough for Biden's inauguration because at 12:01, he's a regular old citizen again and doesn't have the protection of the presidency against all the legal charges waiting for him. My theory was that he sneaks out in the middle of the night sometime in January into Vlad's waiting arms.
But then a friend said that he can't leave the country. As an ex-President, he KNOWS too much. He's been given classified information, and even though he's an idiot and probably didn't retain any of it, he still received it. Plus he has Secret Service protection for the rest of his (useless) life, so there's no way he can sneak out of the country.
I would LOVE to believe that he has no way of avoiding what the Southern District of New York has in store for him and his useless crime family. I know somebody here can answer this definitively.

(26,181 posts)Why in the world do you all think ex Presidents are not allowed to leave the US???

(2,274 posts)If he really wants to leave, he can always ditch his Secret Service Detail and leave. Secret Service protection is not mandatory if the protectee refuses it. Also, SDNY is a Federal entity, not a State one, so if he tries to pardon himself or resigns and Pence pardons him, that would include SDNY charges. However, the Manhattan DA and NY State AG can come after him as the pardon only affects federal jurisdictions.

(26,320 posts)I don't see that happening. There is just a limited number of nations that will allow US citizens to 'visit', now. Not sure if China, Turkey, North Korea and Russia are on that list.

(26,320 posts)Not that I'm planning on any travel, any time soon. I did hear, yesterday, that South Africa has reopened. Not sure if it is accepting US citizens, or not.

(206,712 posts)I thought that COVID-19 related stories weren't restricted.
I was going to make a list, but there were a lot more than I expected, but like I said, most of them had certain restrictions.

(32,749 posts)They would sell him down the river for a nickel boost in oil prices. The world is too small for him to hide. Brazil would be his best hope and that would be the pits for him.
His end will be a huge surprise for everyone, just like his rule. His family will reap what he planted and they deserve it as much as him, except Mary.

(23,366 posts)But I have serious doubts that Putin has any use for his useless ass. He and Jared have probably already stolen and sold many of our national secrets. Hes broke. Melanie wants to leave him. Her step kids hate her. She will move into a swanky apartment in NY with her parents and Barron. MF45 will have to find a way to grift his cult into supporting him. He will slink back down to MAGA-Loco. The SDNY will be in touch with him shortly after that.

(19,264 posts)Narcissists rarely ever flee even when given ample opportunity. Why would they flee the are the smartest greatest most clever person. THEY will never get caught. Other people "suckers and losers" might but they won't.
Trump won't sneak out in the middle of the night.
Trump won't flee to another country (even though he could).
Trump won't attend the inauguration.

(16,616 posts)and still is a counterintelligence investigation into Trump that we don't know about. He strongly suggests that such investigations were opened on more Trump administration officials than we know.
Secondly, there's no good reason why one couldn't be opened (or, similarly, a counterespionage investigation) if there is sufficient grounds for doing so. His communications could legally be monitored.
The FBI could currently be monitoring individuals with whom Trump might come into contact if he does mess around with foreign adversaries, just like Carter Page (?), Mike Flynn and George Papadopoulos (?) were wrangled into investigations because of their contacts with people already being monitored.
Thirdly, in the 2018/19 timeframe, we heard a lot about sealed indictments. I'm not aware of any follow-up, so I don't know if those indictments were ever unsealed. Is it possible there are unsealed indictments already waiting for Trump?

Know who cant?
Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Addington, Haynes, Bybee, and Yoo. If they show up in Europe or Asia they will be arrested for war crimes.

(86,920 posts)He will not be able to leave the country and if he decides to exit the WH like Assange was hauled out of the Ecuadorian embassy, it will facilitate a sequestration of his person. He is a severe national security threat and will not be allowed to go freely into the void of humanity. I suspect that there will be security officials who will be there to make sure his threat is neutralized ASAP. He isn't going anywhere, indictments will be filed in appropriate time to make sure he doesn't go anywhere or have the ability to communicate his bile to the public or international accomplices. Same will likely apply to the offspring and spouse.

(3,059 posts)I mean, I know other presidents have physically left the country on visits, and like Reagan, to cash in on the fact he was president. This lunatic is different...I was wondering more about the "permanently fleeing the country to avoid prosecution" type leaving. Considering he gave away state secrets within what? two weeks of getting into office, he'd give everything he knows up for sanctuary somewhere. Again, doubt that he's retained much, and I always questioned as to whether or not he was actually given the REAL nuclear codes, but he can't be trusted to do anything for anyone but himself. I'm sure at this point, he's ready to throw Don Jr. and Eric under the bus. And if that doesn't work, well sorry Princess...but if it's between you or daddy, he's saving his own skin.

(86,920 posts)The intel/Sec network we have for nothing. I would hope those considerations have been assessed and appropriate action will be taken. If a nobody like me can figure that out, I'm sure more informed individuals have too and are ready to act at the appropriate time.

(15,294 posts)Secret Service protection is provided, but the protectee can decline it.
I think he'll skip the inauguration because he just won't be able to stand being in the same vicinity with the "winner" because it's a zero sum game meaning Trump's the "loser" for all to see. I agree with Michael Cohen, Trump will head to Mar-a-Lago for Christmas and not return to DC at all.
