Diego Armando Maradona, the legendary number 10 who guided Argentina to World Cup glory, thrilling the world in ways no other footballer had done before, has died.
The Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata coach, 60, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at his house in San Andrés, near Tigre, north of Buenos Aires.
He had recently undergone brain surgery.
Multiple news outlets confirmed the news, reporting that the Albiceleste star had fainted at home close to noon. Three ambulances quickly arrived on the scene, but were unable to revive him.
Maradona left hospital two weeks ago, eight days after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot lodged between his brain and skull at a clinic in Olivos.
He had looked unwell during a brief appearance on October 30 to mark his 60th birthday at the Gimnasia's stadium. He seemed to have difficulty walking and did not stay to watch his team's game.
The following Monday, he was taken to hospital in La Plata, where the club is based, suffering from symptoms of anaemia and dehydration.
Pele, Maradona and Messi, the three greatest to ever play the king of sports.

(268,987 posts)He loved Fidel as well. Fidel provided much medical care for him when he had drug problems.
Perhaps one day you'll take the time to find out why people in our hemisphere love those who genuinely practice the social good in our poor ass socities. Anyone who focuses on healthcare and education earns the love of the people.

Doing good from the grave--hot cha cha.
Sad to hear about Maradona. I would have thought he was in great physical condition.
Only 60. A shame.

(268,987 posts)Moved like a tango dancer. Yes he played the beautiful game and brought us much joy and happiness.
He really was way too young. Pele was 80 earlier this year.

(4,268 posts)think that goal in Mexico was his only cheating offense.
He was banned twice. Once for testing positive for cocaine and the other when he was kicked out of the 94 World Cup after testing positive for a cocktail of performance enhancing drugs.
He was protected from drugs tests throughout his career including using other players' urine samples instead of his. Then there was that other incident where he was caught with half a kilo of cocaine and given a suspended sentence.
Yes, he was a big time cheat in almost every aspect of his life. Mafia, unpaid taxes, etc etc

(268,987 posts)I also know all sides including the non-stop pain from numerous injuries from players who knocked him down over and over and were never called by refs.
Sure he was flawed, but that won't prevent me from acknowledging his genius. he was one of the top three players of all time.

(4,268 posts)He was a great player, no doubt. Some people complained that he enjoyed a lot of protection from refs on the pitch as well. To label him a victim of bad refereeing is ridiculous.
But he was also a cheat. In every aspect of his life including on the pitch where he was a master diver. So he was "knocked over' during games....it's a contact sport ffs. "That's why they have refs"......

(16,616 posts)fan. He claimed it wasn't racist, but another player who made the exact same gesture received a five game ban.
I've always been curious what the gesture was, but it was never explained in the articles.

Most of the time there are no referees.
No difference between what he did and what Trump does on the golf course every day.

Historically English commentators whine more than Trump unless the bad calls are on the other side. Happy Thanksgiving.

(4,268 posts)Nobody whines more than trump. No one comes even remotely close.
I watch at least two Premier Leagues matches every weekend as well as different highlights shows, and while the commentators are boring and dull, I don't hear the whining you're referring to. And I'm not British.
