The swollen, discolored, foul-smelling toe would not get better or go away simply because you did not want to deal with it. Untended, the disgusting thing could kill you.
As painful as the decision may be, amputation is sometimes the only remedy for a gangrenous toe---or a foot---or a leg---that has been ignored for too long.
You may or may not see similarities between a gangrenous toe and a rotten White House resident.

(15,805 posts)Life long alcoholic, poorly managed diabetes, lived alone. Started with an infected toe, spread to his foot, then rapidly advanced up to his knee. He never reached out for help. His son went to see him and thought an animal had died due to the stench. It was too late, he deteriorated so quickly and was dead in a few hours after getting to the hospital.
This probably isn't in the direction you thought, but I agree, we need to get rid of the sort and make sure there is never a repeat.
