and that has to be one of the main reasons why the extreme Right Wing faction of the Republican Party nominated Donald Trump in 2016. They knew that if they nominated the biggest asshole, the biggest liar in the universe that it would take about 2 years before anyone from our side would dare call him a liar, but the lies would be set in cement by then, and a new base of mutant ignorant fools would be born.
With the exception of Bernie Sanders who FINALLY spoke up and called Trump a pathological liar, the best anyone else could say whenever Trump lied was "He's misrepresenting the facts" and other weak shit like that. It took just about 4 years before our people started using the actual L word. Even now we're just sitting back waiting for democracy to take place while he's getting away with ramping up a category 5 storm. Someday I would love to see our Party fight fire with fire and kick the shit out any Republican liar on Day ONE, not day 850 when it's too late and the lies have taken hold.

(81,478 posts)Clinton: habitual liar Trump must be curbed in presidential debate
Dan Roberts and David Smith in Washington
Sat 24 Sep 2016 08.26 EDT
It is 90 minutes that could change the world, but Hillary Clinton is already warning that Donald Trump may overwhelm their first presidential debate on Monday if his habitual lying is left unchallenged by the moderator.
The prebuttal from Democratic campaign headquarters came as both candidates hunker down in preparation this weekend, nervously awaiting an estimated television audience of up to 100 million Americans at what opinion polls suggest is the turning point in their race for the White House.
Clintons concern stems from Trumps fast-and-loose rhetorical style, which has been attacked by newspaper fact-checkers but proved devastatingly effective on TV, first against his Republican challengers in the primary and, more recently, in a candidate forum on national security in which he was allegedly allowed to airbrush his past support for the Iraq war.

(46,703 posts)Republicans on the national level get to bully everyone else without consequences. And the pattern repeats itself at the State and Local level.
I always wondered why people were shocked, SHOCKED that I would stand up to them, when they were running over my rights. Like in, who was I that I thought I had any right to question them. And now I see, how it starts at the top. It's a pattern that they see, and try to repeat.
No wonder many of us feel like we're fighting our own battles.
mtnsnake
(22,236 posts)Exactly, and that's partly our fault as a Party for just not being mean enough during the times when we should be mean.

(16,844 posts)the fact-checking is really the job of the press. They are supposed to keep both sides honest; instead, they report what each side says and they act as if there are two competing realities out there and it's up to the viewer to decide which reality he likes the best. That's why we're in the predicament we're in with Q-Anon and all this other RW shit that people are accepting as alternate realities. There's one fucking reality and we need to hear from people who know or have researched about what the truth is!
The press finally started saying only recently that Trumpy isn't telling the truth, that he's spouting conspiracy theories. How much better would things have been if they had told the truth about his claims back in 2015, or all the bullshit he was spreading years before that? Sure, Democrats haven't defended themselves well enough and they haven't attacked the Republicans hard enough, but I lay most of the problems of our political scene these days at the foot of the press. Unfortunately, people depend on them and trust them to give them the truth about what's going on in the world, and they have taken that trust and given them news without knowledge, and that is confusing and worse than useless.

(16,100 posts)the only reason they did it with Trump at all is that it got so over the top and egregious they had to. Plus, he treated them badly, so they retaliated.

(16,844 posts)I mean, what good is it to tell a news story if you don't ground it with facts? It might as well be a work of fiction. If I give a speech in public and I'm running for political office and I make outrageous claims about one group or another, should the press merely replay or print what I say, or should they investigate my claims and report on their veracity? If you don't research your story and arm your reader with facts, you might as well write a fictional account of my speech in the park. The public will have learned just as much about the truth.
mtnsnake
(22,236 posts)No doubt about it. The press ended up loving his bullshit because of the ratings they got out of it. The so called liberal press (yeah right, liberal my ass) were a bunch of wusses.

(16,198 posts)Its what they do..Im paraphrasing Dr Maddow. High and past time to stop being so meek..keep our values, for sure but never, ever lay down without a fight again. We know the game n the rules played by.. learn them well n fight back. Fight like our lives depend on it b/c they do. Just watched MSNBC special on a real President and I wish I had never thought 8 years could go by so fast. But they did and weve got a lot of work do do. Never forget this 4 years and how close we came to lose it all.

(36,053 posts)They never catch patterns early because they're always chasing the next story. Their problem is usually precision without accuracy. As if that somehow makes them "neutral on a moving train."
We need to demand that media harden up and use honest language, not the language their corporate owners tell them to use.
