A typical story.

A widowed neighbor reached out to my husband to ask for help. Her garage door has become inoperable after a power loss.

We are avowed and loyal Democrats. Our lawn demonstrated that clearly this past election season.

She, on the other hand, is a blind trumper loyalist who posts the most hateful and wrong things about Democrats on her FaceBook page. I know this because I lurk.

Yet, she knew where she would get unconditional help. Both my husband and I wouldn’t hestitate.

because our conversations have always been small talk and nothing more.

I struggle deeply with conflicted feelings about such ignorant and hateful minds in our neighborhood. It wasn't until this past election that I discovered them among us, as we have only lived here since December 2016.

Thank you for demonstrating humanity. Will that change anyone? Nah. But it doesn't matter. What matters is what we, as individuals, do. And doing the right thing is always, well ... right.

In a previous life I had an aged neighbor, a widow living on SS and food assistance. Her husband, a successful home builder, squandered all the savings and retirement gambling leaving her with only $750 a month SS (a Democratic program). She got her meals from Meals on Wheels (a non partisan organization) her Medical care from Medicare ( a Democratic program). Her home was in sad repair with kitchen appliances not working properly, large holes in the HVAC ducting, leaky windows doors and roof as well as a healthy rodent population. I (a yellow dog Democrat) applied for a Home Renovation Grant through the Neighborhood revitalization act (a Jimmy Carter Program). I accompanied the inspector during his approval evaluation and not only was she approved but moved to the front of the line due to the abysmal living conditions. As a result she got a new roof, new HVAC system, new hard flooring to accommodate her walker, a complete kitchen renovation, new energy efficient windows and doors, handicapped upgrades to both bathrooms all at NO COST TO HER. I also applied for her to receive utility assistance through another Jimmy Carter program which, with the new upgrades, reduced her energy costs to a fraction of what she had been paying allowing her to actually warm her home instead of wrapping herself in blankets.

I was having lunch with her shortly after to keep company and socialize when the conversation turned to the then pending election. She said to me that she just couldn't vote for the Democraps (a favorite epithet of local Republicans) because they're all communists who want to destroy the country.

30-35 years, almost to the Reagan years. The whole damn party is built on hate, not governing. I was at a Christmas party for a well known Dallas Law firm when Joe Barton was a guest speaker. In the introduction it was noted that he was a staunch no-tax, welfare cutting Republican and best of all he beats Democrats. I mused out loud that I thought politics was about governing. The table got real quiet and everybody just stared at me.

Just ugh.
