https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2020/12/08/michigan-football-ohio-state-canceled-covid-19/3858256001/From wiki...The MichiganOhio State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry game played annually between the University of Michigan Wolverines and The Ohio State University Buckeyes. It gathered particular national interest as most of the games from the 1970s through the mid-2000s determined the Big Ten Conference title and the resulting Rose Bowl Game match ups, and many influenced the outcome of the national college football championship. The game was ranked by ESPN in 2000 as the greatest North American sports rivalry. [2]
The two Midwest state universities first met in 1897, and the rivalry has been played annually since 1918. The game has been played at the end of the regular season since 1935 (with the exceptions of 1942, 1986, and 1998). Since 1918, the game's site has alternated between Columbus, Ohio, and Ann Arbor, Michigan (Michigan hosts it in odd years and Ohio State in even years), and has been played in Ohio Stadium since 1922 and Michigan Stadium since 1927. Through 2010, Ohio State and Michigan have decided the Big Ten Conference championship between themselves on 22 different occasions, and have affected the determination of the conference title an additional 27 times.[3]
All jokes aside, this is a huge deal.

(33,018 posts)snip-"The University of Michigan has canceled its annual football rivalry game against The Ohio State University as the number of COVID-19 cases on its team increases.
This marks the first time in over a century that the two schools have not met on the football field.
"We have not been cleared to participate in practice at this time," said Warde Manuel, Michigan's athletics director, in a statement. "Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close-contact individuals. This decision is disappointing for our team and coaches but their health and safety is paramount, and it will always come first in our decision-making."
snip-"Ohio State is currently 5-0 and ranked fourth in the country. Following the conference title games, a committee picks the top four teams to play for the national championship."

(53,815 posts)Going back on it has lead to this game and several others being cancelled in conferences all over the country. And now with covid infections worst than ever, and getting worse still, the national champion series is even threatened.
Stay tuned, everyone.

(36,747 posts)Not enough in conference games and no out of conference games played.
If it were an 8 team playoff structure, yes. Four teams, no.

(5,528 posts)My daughter is a student at OSU and this is going to bum her out.
As mentioned above, this would keep OSU out of the B10 Championship by current policy.
However, I would bet that they will change the policy and let them play the conference championship game. The only team even close to them in the standings is the Indiana team they beat head-to-head.
It has been a mess throughout the NCAA but I am grateful that they put together a season. Some of you will give me shit for that but that is my opinion.

This was crucial in reaching the unanimous decision for our football teams to return to competition.
snip-"After indefinitely suspending the fall season over a month ago, the Big Ten conference had received incredible pushback from players and parents alike, spearheaded by star cornerback Shaun Wades father who organized protests in both Chicago (Big Ten Headquarters) and Columbus.
Johnson, however, firmly stood behind the conference and praised its deliberate process in making sure every action would be taken to keep each athlete safe in their sport."

(26,045 posts)During last night's MLS playoff game, they were boasting about what a huge day they were going to have on Saturday in Columbus: OSU-UM at noon, followed by the MLS Cup final "a half-mile away" at 8:00 P.M. Now, they've only got the soccer match to fill the day's programming.
