(10,135 posts)I feel like I read something here this year about gay marriage being in the cards for China. Maybe Pete and Chaz can forge some additional inroads there

Chinese is a tough language to learn, but if anyone can do it, it's Pete!

(53,061 posts)Our relationship with China is extremely complicated and going forward the two largest economies and the two largest militaries are going to have to find areas of cooperation and compromise.
We will win some but not all of these battles. For example we will be able to have some influence in policy in Hong Kong but a significant part of the protest leadership doesn't want just democratic reform but independence and that, like the idea of Hawaiian independence is not going to happen. There is likely to be ongoing conflict and no magic solution.
Even the best best case scenario will have some issues that will not be settled to our satisfaction and if the ambassador is a future candidate it will be used against him or her. For that reason our ambassador to China must be a diplomatic professional with no political agendas.
A better match for Mayor Pete (who I hope will someday be President) is ambassador to the European Union which is very demanding and also very critical to rebuilding our Alliance.
