Have Republicans wrecked our democracy?

The New York Times, 12-13-2020

" Trump Has Never Believed in Democracy "
.....................

" He keeps lying to his supporters, telling them — partly out of pride, partly out of a craven quest for power — that he was cheated and that he actually won the election. Many of them believe him. Right-wing media have aided him in his deception, as have Republican officials, either through their public pronouncements or through their silence. "
.....................

" That a majority of all Republicans in the House of Representatives expressed support for the frivolous Texas lawsuit signals to me that the difference between liberals and conservatives is no longer about values; it is now about a fundamental belief in democracy. Republicans appear to be saying that not all votes matter or should be counted. This is voter suppression on the grandest of scales, because it is an attempt at voter erasure, at eliminating votes that have already been cast and counted. "

...I think they have and I'm not sure we'll ever be able to fix it...

...sad...

The nation witnessed, and allowed the five black-robed traitors on the court to steal the election in plain sight.

And if their perfidious disregard for the will of the voters in Florida wasn't enough, every election, they employ whatever tactics they can get away with to deny as many Americans (cities, black, young, generally democratic) as possible their right to easily cast their ballot and have confidence their votes will be accurately counted.

Citizen's United was another democracy wrecking milestone.

Trump's propaganda and stochastic terrorism is just the latest nail in the coffin.

I still remember all the signs of creeping fascism in 2000, many of the parts of fascism were put in place during the Bush Administration and Obama didn’t or couldn’t take them out for the most part. I knew it was only a matter of time that someone would claim the dictator throne that was seemingly being readied especially by Republicans, and then here comes Trump... and here we are...

When David Sentelle replaced the Whitewater independent counsel with Ken Starr we were placed on a very dangerous path.

That was the moment, in my mind, when the GOP decided that they were pretty much done with democracy. And it happened all the way back in 1994.

...in the first place by Chief Justice Rehnquist.

IIRC, the law enabling the Independent Counsel indicated that senior judges at the end of their careers should be named to the oversight panels. The belief was that this would less susceptible to political influences and ambitions (such as a convenient SC nomination).

The other two judges on the panel followed that (Joseph T. Sneed, age 74, and John D. Butzner Jr., age 77), but Rehnquist simply ignored that provision when he named 51-year-old and very politically active Sentelle, a Jesse Helms protege.

It's important to Accentuate the Positive.. like in the song..

You gotta accent-thu-ate the positive,
E-lim-inate the negative,
An' latch on
To the affirmative
Don't mess with mister in-between!

continued to improve things and have had set backs.

Remember that many groups could not vote throughout much of this our history. People have had to fight for it. And voter suppression in minority communities has always gone on. It gets more attention at times but it's something that has always happened.

...so many Americans willing to look the other way, chuck law and order and our Constitution for political advantage, follow blindly an obvious demagogue is depressing...

...and as others have pointed out, this has been going on for a long time...

The only thing that "wrecks" democracy is complacency. I hope the Democratic base has learned their lesson, and will continue to get off their asses and vote in EVERY election, not just the ones where electing the president is involved.
