The message won every time. Sweden was trying the "herd immunity" experiment, and because it required the least amount of effort, it attracted Trump's attention. I don't remember who was testifying (Atlas?), but he pegged "herd immunity" at a 50% infection rate. Someone on the panel who had more loyalty to medical science told the witness that 50% was extremely low, and that the witness would likely find himself alone among epidemiologists claiming herd immunity with such a low infection rate.
In spite of the wrongness of their position, the Trump administration forged ahead. They stubbornly did nothing to curtail the spread of the virus and in fact helped it along with pointless squabbles over masks, hand-washing, and reducing the risk of exposure. Now we have a significant, perhaps permanent, segment of the country who will do nothing to protect themselves and others from infection, guaranteeing thousands of needless deaths as Americans across the country wheeze away their lives surrounded by machines and strangers.
