America It Was Nice Knowing You

My wife really, really, really wants to go see her family on Christmas Eve like always.

My mom told me of all the folks coming to my sister's for Christmas.

America, you are so screwed.

I will start praying now.

And on CNN map Washington State is bright red.

I forgot. Super Covid is here. Thanks Boris.

COVID is out of control and the Trumpsters are belligerent about masks and closures. Not the place to be right now.

3. Even my sane, progressive relative was talking about gathering.

I think people are going through the peaks of COVID fatigue but this is exactly the crucial moment we can’t let up. I told my relative as much as I’d love to see family, there’s no way I’m gathering with anyone, and as a reminder, maybe people should search recent social media posts by our worn out, frustrated and heart broken healthcare workers begging Americans to stay home. BTW, I'm in WA too.

They are not always simple choices. My father told me to never wager anything that I could not afford to lose.

Odds are with them. And shouldn't we all be counting our blessings as part of being competent adults? Not just to be as happy as we can be in our situations, but also and especially so we will work harder to protect them and make wiser choices in future as citizens.

Here's a Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come for perspective: These are some ex- middle class urbanites in the once relatively advanced nation of Venezuela. Instead of ordering a pizza to eat while binge-watching cable during Christmas vacation from work, as some might once have done, they're waiting hours to enter a supermarket for whatever they'll find on the shelves at enormously inflated prices.

Mostly, though, the streets have become too dangerous (criminals, Maduro's collectivos, police), even in the daytime, to spend much time out, so masses of unemployed people tend to remain inside amap with their children. Most have cars and are much safer locked in them when out; but while gas is still cheap, car parts and tires may be impossible to get. I've forgotten the median weight loss per capita from inadequate food, but I think it's somewhere around 20 pounds.

A lot of unfortunate choices by citizens over the years went into creating that scene. That society failed to protect what they had.

Merry Christmas from two retired Americans living in luxury and comfort on very modest fixed income. And in safety in spite of Covid. WE don't have to stand for hours in line because we'd starve if we didn't.

6. There's a chance this strain didn't even originate in the UK.

From my understanding, the UK is far more diligent in tracking strains than other countries.

Even if tested, the tests are not always accurate. That would be a real nice Christmas or Hanukkah gift. We all want to do those things, but choose not to. The odds aren't good enough yet.

As I live in the Seattle/Tacoma metro area I monitor this every day.

The bad news is, as you indicate, the ability of too many folks to follow commen sense guidelines thru the holidays is weak. The rationalization away of risk will cause the cases to go back up after xmas gatherings.

Everything each one of us does, in the face of this, still helps. Do what you can to stay safe.
