(58,785 posts)virtually none of the turmoil of 2018 because our big majority then has become much tighter and not standing with Pelosi could have resulted in a Speaker McCarthy. We were united, even those whose usual schtick is refusing to be.

(4,400 posts)She was definitely the woman for these times. Her courage, knowledge and experience showed the way. We still need her savvy, especially if that turtle stays majority leader. What a sweet start to this New Year if he's stripped of his power.

(21,500 posts)Yes, we need new, young leaders. But there is a learning curve for every new position in life. The middle of a national crisis is not the time to switch leaders from an experienced one to someone who will need time to get acclimated.

(67,782 posts)Henry Clay was elected Speaker to six terms, but served just about 10-1/2 years, and left the House for a term in the middle of that period.
Sam Rayburn served more than any other Speaker, divided among three periods - 1940-1947, 1949 to 1953, and 1955-1961.
So, with Pelosi now in her fourth term as Speaker it appears that she's #4 with respect to overall tenure of four terms.

(15,325 posts)Maybe finish the story, because it wasn't for lack of trying on her part.
I applaud the great Democratic women leaders. They are the barrier breakers & they have the stories to back that up too.
Applause to all our Dem women who walked that path long before the "cool kids" arrived. 🙄

"I'm not for impeachment," Pelosi said. "This is news. I'm going to give you some news right now because I haven't said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I've been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he's just not worth it."

(15,325 posts)We know so little about what & why.
We'll never know because we can't know it all.
I'll stick with trusting Speaker Pelosi on her choice, given the security info she & Dem leaders were given.
As far as those who can't seem to bring themselves to applaud even one of the remarkable skillsets of Speaker Pellosi, her accomplishments in all her years serving the public, I have no use for the smear campaigns lodged against our Dem leaders to merely demean their characters in order to elevate their own cool kids, with zero experience to offer.
When all one has is character assassination to elevate themselves, then there's no point in hearing any more.
Yes. That m.o. has been overplayed ad~nauseum.
I'll stand with the proven leaders of the Democratic Party & those women who made it possible for the cool kids to have a seat at the table & a voice in the process.
Have these women got stories to tell of their early days, breaking thru barriers in a political heirarcy made for men!
Thank you to those remarkable Democratic women who lived thru the changes in our system.
Applause to Speaker Pelosi & those who walked that path with you.

(42,770 posts)her character ever. Iin fact, I have never seen any Dem do that, despite loyalists repeating that inaccuracy!
Just time to step aside. She knows that and hopefully the rumors are right and she's grooming a progressive replacement and we only have to wait two years more.
Constructive criticism IS allowed here. We need a whole new canvas of leaders.
If our party couldn't beat a lying, impeached, woman abusing traitor who committed negligent homicide by 70%-30% something is ineffective! It is ALWAYS the prudent thing to look at your organization and assess assess and reassess!

(15,325 posts)OUR PARTY DID IMPEACH TRUMP.
Thanks to Speaker Pelosi's House of Reps.

Your statement from above:
"If our party couldn't beat a lying, impeached, woman abusing traitor who committed negligent homicide by 70%-30% something is ineffective! It is ALWAYS the prudent thing to look at your organization and assess assess and reassess!"
Our Democratic Party lead by Speaker Pelosi DID Indeed Impeach Trump. Talk to the Republican lead Senate for why they failed. That's not Pelosi's house. She & our Democratic House succeeded in their effort.
Facts matter, btw

(42,770 posts)That is laughable, sorry.
Brilliant, all encompassing articles introduced in the House on Nov 15, 2017! By Steve Cohen D-TN and other prescient reps.
Few had the insight that he and others did back then. That trump had to be stopped or things would get progressively worse. And his approvals were the lowest ever under 40. They never got that low again until maybe now.
Something I will always remember...an interview of a republican after we expressed no outrage nor did not act after Mueller report. They said, " No I didn't read report, I figure if anything bad, the Dems would have done something".
Never forget that.
The actual action when wrong is committed is sadly gone. Jeez he committed a blatant crime days ago and Jefferies this morning simply days " we are looking forward not backward"

(67,782 posts)1. It wouldn't be bipartisan
2. He definitely is not worth it - he'll be out of office in two weeks from tomorrow.
And I'll add:
3. Impeachment requires hearings - one can't just introduce a one-hour tape on the floor of the House and then directly proceed to a vote for impeachment.
Here statement was in 2019, with a virtually unlimited amount of time. She/they/we now have a mere two weeks and I doubt the Senate would take it up before trump leaves office.
The audio of that call was just released on January 3, Biden will replace him on January 20. Do you really think something as involved as impeachment, which has occurred only THREE times in our ~240 year history, can be put together and proceed in a mere two weeks?
What's the point?
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)they feel it in their souls, so strongly that they stand up, unequivocally, without looking at the consequences we will never grow in strength.
You can not teach it, you have to feel it. If a person can't see how trump unchecked went from a petty thief to a monster, there is nothing you can do.
George II
(67,782 posts)....is out of office is asking the impossible. Even if the House could muster up a vote in the next week or so, do you really think that the Senate would hold the trial before trump is out of office.
How can you imply that Nancy Pelosi doesn't "feel it", she's probably the most politically savvy member of either house of either party.
She knows what she's doing, and in her six years so far as Speaker she hasn't pushed a single vote that she didn't know would work out for the Democrats.
Do you remember how long the process was last December through early February? It is physically impossible for the proceeding to take place in about two weeks. There have to be hearings, evidence presented, debate, a vote to advance to the floor of the House, then more debate, then a floor vote. THEN it goes to the Senate. By that time, even if it started this afternoon the vote to impeach wouldn't occur until after January 20.
You can't impeach someone who isn't in office.
I suspect you just have an issue with Nancy Pelosi and our Democratic leadership.
By the way, just this morning James Clyburn also came out with a statement saying that an impeachment would just be a waste of time.
