My MAGA sister is losing her shit again.

I've posted some of her stuff here in the past, but today's salvo was so far into the "Republican Talking Points" terrain that I don't want to push the DU rule on not posting that crap.

SUFFICE IT TO SAY that she's OK with whatever happens in DC on Wednesday because she's had enough, and if there's violence, so be it.

Invariably, folks on DU ask me if I've tried to reason with her on any of this. Do any of you cook? Do you make things in a 450 degree oven, and you open the oven to see how it's going and you get a blast of 450 degree heat in your face? That's my sis. She's in her mid-70s, and has a life-sized cardboard cutout of Trump in her home, along with MAGA bumper stickers everywhere.

Kills me, but the people who went over the deep end for Trump are beyond reason.

Politics means life and death to some people. You know this. Dreamers depend upon politics to stay in their country. Children in cages at the border are victims of politics. People being murdered by police are victims of politics.

It's not silly to any of those people.

Having said that, we have to weigh to situation individually. We NEARLY had a clean break with my wife's parents when they went all Trumpy crazy. After nearly cutting them off, they realized that they want to see their only Grandchild and they honor our NO POLITICS rule when we are all together. But My brother-in-law? Fuck 'im. He's a completely crazy OAN-watching nutbag. Same with most of the cousins. I don't see any advantage in maintaining a relationship with people who earnestly wish others harm.

Shortly after Trump was elected, I mentioned to him that Republicans were very interested in knee-capping Social Security. He gets SS as well as a fat pension from the San Francisco Airport...he'd lose money if he lost SS but the pension and "Rolls Royce" medical benefits he gets from the airport dwarf anything he gets from SS. His response is "If it doesn't affect me, I don't care." And that's his attitude about everything in life. I cut off communications with him about 2 years ago after he pulled a little backstabbing stunt that was the proverbial straw breaking the camel's back.

Your sister became more extreme, and someday she might become a lot less depending on influences. Something to hope for.

My only sibling, a half sister, and I weren't raised together and were never close, but being estranged is a loss even from her. She's mean as a snake but very charming, a lethal combination, and given to a broad spectrum of religious and other excesses. Unlike your sister, she tried out lesbianism (while raising four teenagers) before being reborn into a fundamentalist sect. She's capable of good sense and decency, but always erratically interspersed with ___!, and I can't guess where she is politically these days, only that, no matter what, our thoughts would turn out to be on nonintersecting lines.

Thinking your chances with your sister might be better.

When her church rather subtly hinted that 'real' Christians vote for Trump back in 2016, and Trump earned 81% of the evangelical vote, Mrs. Aristus cut all ties to the church, everyone who attended it, and all pro-Trump family members.

That's the only upside to the last four years of horror...

Tue Jan 5, 2021, 10:05 AM
Jan 2021

It came more from my brother-in-law than my sister, the whole "WOW! We have FOUR YEARS of MAGA!" I very simply said "Look. I didn't vote for him. I don't like him, I don't respect him, and we're going to have to agree to disagree right up front and avoid the subject altogether because I'm not getting on the Trump train. If you feel that way, great. The way for me to respect how you feel is to keep it to yourself and know that there isn't an open door on my end for you to discuss him, unless you want to hear more about why I don't like him, and I'm not interested in having that conversation."

And that pretty much kept the Trump conversations down to none, for the most part, until my sister reads something on my Facebook page that triggers her, and when she replies, I never reply to her. I just let her rant, and sometimes my friends pile on her, so I send them a private message and let them know she's my sister, and every time they offer an apology and say "Sorry, I didn't know, I'll back off," to which I reply "No, don't do that, I'm just letting you know that she's my sister so you'll understand why I don't "unfriend" her or tear her a new one for posting MAGAt crap on my page."

I’ve got a draft of a message calling her out but I’m not satisfied with it yet. She has only sent me about three political messages since the pandemic started. I refuted the first two but the third was so slavishly fawning and full of lies that I didn’t know where to even start. I used to send her funny non political links but no more. She still sends me occasional links to things (not political) she thinks are funny or interesting. I’ve stopped responding. I’m done with her and her even worse husband.

At least not until the inauguration. It's not worth it. Anyone that thinks all mainstream media is corrupt and only far-right idiots are correct is too far gone to be reasoned with. I'm waiting. Every month things will improve.

I'll bet you ten bucks it doesn't happen before Inauguration Day (or some other date certain). Whaddya say? Want to put your money where your mouth is, or name some other day when you think X is going to happen? Let's hear it."

Seriously it is a cult worship of that orange clown. And with as amusing as some of the antics of his cult worshipers can be, in reality it's creepy. What would she do if he asked his cult followers to sell their homes, drink the orange Kool-Aid and meet him in the "promised land"? I actually think there would be those who would do it.

She also posts ALL of the paintings of Trump, the most recent one showing him portrayed in a Revolutionary War uniform with the words "January 6th will be our new 4th of July."

Not kidding about that one either. It's on her Facebook page.

Other than mass deprogramming, we simply have to dilute their votes and wait for them to die off. Luckily, many are in a demographic where age expectancy is in sharp decline.

it could be worse..like having a brother who is a QANON believer and a Trump supporter rolled into one. We went to the same schools, have the same parents, and only 2 years apart in age. Last time I called and talked to him we argued back and forth about the election, and trump, and as much as I hate to say it we actually argued about whether the earth was actually round or flat. I ended my conversation around that point almost in tears. He's my only brother and we ain't gettin any younger. So yeah I feel ya.

My brother has always been conservative and I knew he voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 but I had no idea how much of a Trump supporter he was! Last month we had a long discussion (argument) over the phone about "voter fraud" and it was then I found out he was also a Q believer! He has totally drunk the Koolaid. He ranted about how the election was rigged by the Democrats with the help of the Chinese, North Koreans, Venezuela, the Deep State, George Soros, Antifa, BLM, the mainstream media, the Illuminati and God knows who else! It was a huge mishmash of conspiracy theories. I told him he was talking crazy but that just set him off. There was "PROOF" of everything he espoused he said and he directed me to lunatic conspiracy sites. I tried to reason with him using logic and common sense but he was too far down the rabbit hole. He seriously believes that Trump won in a landslide and that there is a global conspiracy to take him down because he was fighting against "world-wide socialism". In the end we agreed not talk politics anymore.
Don't get me wrong, my brother is a nice guy but he has zero critical thinking skills, is really gullible and not the brightest bulb in the bunch. In other words, he is the perfect Republican voter. I makes me feel sad and frustrated that he has done down that path.

She lives in Florida and is an Evangelical Christian. Believes God put 45 in the Whitehouse to save us all. Last week she was raging on gays. Said God gave men a penis for a reason. I replied hmm, and all these years I thought God gave men a penis so they could write their name in the snow. That brought silence from her.

It really is a shame. These people are brainwashed. Our educational system has let the country down. These dummies are literally like lemmings. The "educated" ones are just greedy, bigotted, elitists who claim to be Christians and they are lightyears from it. Thank God DeVos is bye bye. What stage is limpballs in? He won't be missed either.

Every day I think that we can't possibly hit bottom, and then we go lower.

It is absolutely fucking nuts. I can understand people having political differences. That has existed as long as this country has. But I have never seen such blatant worship of a candidate. These people don't just have one Trump sticker on their cars - they have 50. They don't just have 1 or 2 Trump signs in the yard - they have 25. The same people who accused us of worshipping Obama are now ready to shoot their fellow citizens in Trump's name.

I will never, ever understand Trump's "appeal." I could understand it if Trump was an eloquent speaker, or if he was a handsome charmer, or if he cloaked the craziness in folksy appeal, or could joke and laugh at himself. But none of that is true with Trump. He is stupid, amoral, big-mouthed, and butt-ugly (apologies to butts). Trump literally has no redeeming qualities. What kind of person looks at him and thinks 'Yeah, I want 4 more years of that."

His diehard supporters live in an alternate universe, though. Sometimes I will see a hateful comment on Facebook and I'll click on that person's profile, and it is so scary it seems to be a parody. Right-wing websites and news sites and conspiracy theories. It is truly frightening.
