Firstly, for Trump, but secondly, for future presidents.
'Cause right now, I don't see *any* guardrails anymore.
WHEEEEEEEEEE we're in freefall, yaaaaaaay....!!

(17,862 posts)They should be debating impeachment on the House floor right now. Suspend whatever rules are necessary, and then throw it into McConnell's lap after the vote.
The National Review wrote a glowing piece about McConnel's finest hour (finishing the count). Really...

1) They aren't running for re-election next time anyway. Whether it is 2 or 4 or 6 years from now, a handful already know they've never got to face a Repuke primary ever again. Trump is a danger to everyone, including Senators; get rid of him.
2) Ambitious SOBs who want to run for POTUS in 2024 but don't want to face Trump in a primary; for some the ability to ban Trump from ever holding federal office will outweigh fear of resentful Trumpists still obsessed with a then has-been three years hence.
3) Establishment Repukes who care much more about corporate and executive money than Trump fans, because with enough money they know they can dupe the rubes. Lots of corporate and executive types are raising hell about this coup shit. Don't kill the golden goose; ditch Donald instead.

(3,013 posts)One does not necessarily preclude the other. I just heard a litany of loopholes in the 25th Amendment that Trump could exploit to stop it, for instance firing all Cabinet Secretaries before it is invoked. (It was conceived for Presidents that had been incapacitated physically by stroke or some such so didn't cover this exact situation). But, if they can hit him on two fronts, maybe he'll be too busy to do something even more damaging like attacking Iran or something worse. I really would like to see the House run through the weekend as necessary and kick an impeachment to Mitch and see him squirm.

After failing to impeach and remove for torture one really does have to wonder how bad the offense needs to be to get 2/3s of the Senate to remove.
With the current republican office holders, I think Trump would have to shoot someone on 5th Ave, and even that might not get a supermajority.
