So tired of every president playing that elitist game. Waste of space, waste of water, overuse of pesticides and a haven for RW businessmen to decide how they're going to rule over the rest of us.

(1,979 posts)it's a game. Don't judge it by the Trump Douche Canoe. He's a baby man who never grew up and if it wasn't golf he played/cheated it would be every other aspect of his life.

(31,261 posts)There are no chemicals, things are maintained by mowing and seeding. The ones that I played on seldom watered, only during very severe droughts and then it was for only a minute.
It is funny about golf. There is the stuffy Country Club world and there is the public fee world (where the vast majority of golfers play).

(31,261 posts)I estimate is they made decent money, but nothing to shout about. Most were on or near environmentally sensitive areas, so use of chemicals was not part of the plan. It all seemed mutually beneficial, the state set off protected land for wildlife and got fees from the golf course owner to help with performance of wildlife care functions.

(31,261 posts)The courses that I played on seldom watered (only during bad droughts), didt use chemicals - only used over-sanding of greens with seed added and hole-punching on the greens during the Fall. I was invited to Country Clubs, but always turned that down. One relaxing aspect of golf was grabbing a few holes after a stressful day at work, the act of walking and listening to the birds and occasionally ,other animals, was relaxing.

(22,037 posts)It's a noble game played by people from all walks of life.
On the golf course, no one cares if you're rich or poor, young or old, male or female. Just play the game efficiently!
Public golf is not as you imagine it. It isn't elitist as it is at exclusive private country clubs. The space used for public golf is usually a public park that generates significant income for the municipality. The obvious fact that it's difficult to get tee times on these courses illustrates that the public wants this opportunity.
Regarding the use of water and pesticides, different parts of our vast country have different water supply and insect issues and areas with long-term droughts are of serious concern. Many courses have developed "green" ways to manage their courses and more and more facilities are seeing the advantages of these changes.
About the people who play golf, I'd offer this observation. In the 20+ years I've been golfing, where I've probably played a few thousand rounds, there have been exactly 2 rounds where I was playing with an asshole. One actually got arrested for assaulting another golfer! Simply, golfers aren't all rich CEOs using their corporate golf memberships to plot with other CEOs how to screw the workers.
However, I will offer this remembrance. In 2012, when President Obama was running for reelection against Mitt Romney, Golf Digest did an anonymous poll of the golf world's touring pros, both women and men. The result was 85% to Romney and 15% to Obama. Golf pros come from the country club set and they make tons of money.

The elitist tag is a remnant from the first half of the 20th century.
After Ike was a golfer, then Palmer can along, the vast bulk of golfers are lower middle to middle class. That happened over 60 years ago.

(19,993 posts)It can allow a person to set aside all their worldly troubles for a couple hours and focus intently on the exacting elements of hitting one good golf shot after another. Some Presidents may have played the game for that respite from the weight of their duties, and in that sense it is probably a good thing.

Biden likes to keep fit, but after all the hoopla around golf, he may not make it such a regular pastime. He has other options.
