why do they still want to go to DC and the state capitals to protest and be violent? I mean, if they're furious at Trump, they can't want him as President anymore. And if that's true, doesn't that make them more anarchist than fascist?

(90,714 posts)Trump merely gave voice to and empowered the dark forces that already existed. His presence amplified them. FOX and social media sucked more people in.
With or without Trump, the same grievances and delusions still exist. FOX and Facebook still exist.
The people who participated in the insurrection need to be publicly called to account and publicly punished by the Law. Leave understanding them to social scientists and clergy and people like us, but really that only gets you so far.

(12,344 posts)Trump is no longer their leader. And without a leader, fascists do turn into anarchists.

When, in all our history, has everyone been pro-democracy? These radicals are the latest version. They don't want equal justice, equal opportunity, equal treatment. Like Trump, they want impunity to bully, get their way by intimidation. So they continue to incite violence, spread fear. And it works. We've had several stories of congresspeople voting against impeachment because their family had been threatened.
But, fear mongering and violence is all they have. Some followers will have a change of heart, perhaps including harming their leaders. Some will realize that they can't win against govt troops.
Some will see their comrades killed by troops. When Jefferson said that sometimes the tree of liberty must be sprinkled with the blood of patriots, he was speaking of a specific rebellion. The patriots were the rebels, whom he saw as misinformed, but Americans. He felt that if the rebels lost some lives, the rest would settle down and listen to reasonable facts. It never made sense that having lived through a revolution and helped to create a constitution that provided the means for change, Jefferson would be advocating the bloody overthrowing of the government he helped create as the means for change.
However, now what's also bad about Jefferson's advice is that no one can be sure if our rebels would listen to facts after the bloodletting. What we've seen is that they listen to lies. We're centuries away from the age of reason or enlightenment. We're in the Big Lie time. We've got a real problem!
