Gab CEO has a new illo of what he thinks his users are "fighting for" after the neo-Nazi illo

he'd used earlier for an article on Gab.

My OP about the illo I'd found earlier:

https://upload.democraticunderground.com/100214887228

Parlertakes tweet last night with Gab CEO's new illo:

I wonder if someone pointed out to Andrew Torba, Gab's CEO, that the illo he was using earlier was basically a parody of what a German neo-Nazi party wanted, as we figured out in the replies in my earlier thread (see the subthread there starting with reply 12 from Iterate, whom I want to thank again for locating the source of that illustration).

Editing to add that I'm now positive Gab's CEO is embarrassed by the earlier illo, which had shown up in his tweet a week ago linking to that article and showing the Nazi-style illo.

That tweet has now been deleted.

Here's the link to the article, showing the illo, This was uploaded to Gab early last month:

I know some people like to message how cool they are by using ultra-modern slang, but in practice the ideas and information they are trying to communicate are better served by clear English and not obscure in-group signalling.

My experience is far from definitive, but it is evidently not unique. I do a lot of reading from a large variety of sources, left, right, fiction, scientific, tweets by twits, essays, etc. I have never encountered "illo" before in my life.

I appreciate that apparently you have taught me a new word, but your unexplained usage of it did deflect me from whatever it was that you were trying to say in your Original Post.

I probably saw or heard it most often in reference to "magazine illos." But you didn't have to be working in commercial art or publishing to hear about it. It was standard usage.

it's all over Twitter as part of the Twitter handle for artists. And it shows up in lots of posts from people who are fans of anime and other types of illustration, and I'd guess the majority of those aren't Boomers.

But when I was into anime big, mid-90s to mid-00s, it was definitely not a thing. Never heard it in my photography circles either, but I'm admittedly not super deep into that community. Googling (for me, at least) "illo illustration" gets a first page of six illustration agencies, two sketchbook companies, and the Urban Dictionary page - it's not widely enough used to even get an auto-definition at the top of the search results.

Sorry, but it *is* a term of art, used in certain communities but obscure outside those groups. Not the end of the world, but not something you probably want to casually drop in subject lines, either - I catch myself having to correct chef/kitchen slang a lot.

be okay to snipe at the person who posted them.

And in this case the meaning of illo is also clear from the OP. While it wasn't from various posts using acronyms I had to look up.
