Virginia man who was arrested by Capitol police at an inauguration checkpoint in Washington D.C. with 500 rounds of ammunition has called the incident an "honest mistake."
Wesley A. Beeler, 31, of Front Royal, was stopped at a checkpoint north of the Capitol building around 6:30 p.m. on Friday in a white truck and produced credentials that were deemed "not authorized to enter the restricted area," according to police documents.
Authorities found an unregistered gun in Beeler's vehicle, "509 9MM rounds of hollow point & ball ammunition" and shotgun shells. Beeler was arrested on five charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, possessing an unregistered firearm, unlawful possession of assumption and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device, according to Capitol police.
In an interview with the Washington Post, Beeler called the incident an "honest mistake" and said he accidentally drove into the restricted area checkpoint "after getting lost in D.C. because I'm a country boy."

This is not from the Onion.
This is not satire.
This is our country.

(5,969 posts)He should have been kept in jail at least until the inauguration is over and until it's clear whether he's a terrorist or just a moron. Too many of these nutjobs were released on bail.

NVA probe during Lam Son 719. They just wanted to check out our capabilities and response. The few NVA soldiers probing our perimeter came, elicited a big response from us (the flares went on all night), and quietly left. Poker. We showed them all of our cards.

(3,445 posts)I thought his mom (?) said he had been going into DC every night for the last several days to "work security for the inauguration."
Wouldn't he be a bit more familiar with DC if that were true?

(1,660 posts)It is hardcore Trump country.
My friend from there who used to be a democrat became a hardcore Trumper and I had to cut her off.
I don't know what the real situation is. I think he could have been testing the perimeter as well. The fact that he was working for some security group that is doing security around there is concerning. How many other people like that do they have working security. I mean where do people think his allegiance lies?

(6,265 posts)has been brought into sharp focus with this attempt at a coup. IF this has been POC perpetrating this insurrection, many more than 5 people would be dead. The hypocrisy surrounding and suffusing this event is truly overwhelming. America your ass is uncovered and the entire world has seen it.. sad indeed. But I'm happy that the elephant always in the room has been located. Not a real hard discovery since January 6 2021...

(5,969 posts)It seems to me that the unregistered firearm alone and a ton of ammunition should remove any doubt about honest mistakes. Clearly there is intent behind these kind of actions. We are talking about someone who works in security and should absolutely know better. Attempted terrorist attack should be another one of his charges.

Last week, Wesley Allen Beeler sent his mom, Charlotte Beeler, photos of the Capitol Building where Joe Biden would be sworn in.
Beeler was arrested in an unauthorized area with a gun and 500 rounds. Beeler had firearms-related stickers on his vehicle.

(8,054 posts)he didn't intend to enter and needed to turn around. People do that all the time on roads to military bases. You can U-turn out of the line of traffic near the gate. So the fact that he tried to present ID means he did intend to enter the restricted zone.
