Baylor's Kim Mulkey: CBB Season Will Be Played Because of 'Almighty Dollar'

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10000389-baylors-kim-mulkey-womens-cbb-season-will-be-played-because-of-almighty-dollar?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

As Baylor women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey explained Saturday, the only reason the 2020-21 season is taking place amid the COVID-19 pandemic is because of money.

"The answer is this: The season will continue on. It's called the almighty dollar," Mulkey said, per Mechelle Voepel of ESPN.com. "The NCAA has to have the almighty dollar from the men's tournament. The almighty dollar is more important than the health and welfare of me, the players or anybody else."

Mulkey announced in early January she tested positive for COVID-19, and she was away from her team for several weeks before returning for Saturday's loss to Iowa State. Her Bears fell to 8-2 on the season but are currently ranked No. 6 in the country.

Even with the latest loss, which ended an NCAA-best streak of 61 straight home wins for Baylor, the squad is still one of the nation's best and has a chance to help Mulkey earn her fourth national championship.

The endowments while very valuable are not enough to keep the entirety of the system afloat.

Columbus has hosted for years a body builder expo - The Arnold-yeah that guy.

Gov DeWine cancelled that event on March 3, 2020, cause the CDC pointed out the dangers of covid.

Part of the Arnold Sports Festival has been canceled amid concerns about the coronavirus, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Tuesday.

DeWine said the athletic competition will move forward, but spectators will only be allowed in for the Arnold Classic finals on Saturday night. The event’s weekend-long trade show is fully canceled."

"Employees get their wages and salary and go out and spend their money here, on goods and services, at restaurants and so on. And then there's all the lost [city and state] tax revenue." The typical one-day visitor spends $130, and the average overnight visitor stays three nights and spends $250,..."

snip-Documents from the city detailing the budget can be seen here. The 2020 general budget for the city was $969 million.

In September, the city council passed an ordinance to reduce the general fund by $41.5 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As we work on our budget for 2021, we need to anticipate this lost revenue that may well continue into the next year," Ginther said at the time.

Since the coronavirus emerged earlier this year, city leaders have worked to decrease spending through eliminating travel, delaying raises and imposing a hiring freeze on most positions....

It is an unspoken truth that Big University towns use the unpaid labor of student athletes to draw visitors, those visitors spend LOTS of money.

I really don't give too much concern about OSU endowment.
I am really more concerned about lots of young athletes getting the corona long term follow ups that will come because of the near parasitic involvement between town and gown.

And Mulkey is totally aware of that.

The money that comes into a Big Uni town is a ''Quality of Life Issue" now, less money in equals less to spend on the increased needs of a city that has less employment and higher social services needs.

The pandemic is going to be a decades long social and civic issue in my opinion.

She makes over $2M coaching a program that loses money. The program that does make money at Baylor is the football team, which went through a sexual abuse scandal that was covered up from the top (Kenneth Starr) though the campus and local police to people running the football program. Mulkey's response was to downplay the whole thing.

She is part of the administrative team, as evidenced by her wearing a t-shirt at games saying "We are more". In other words don't judge us by this even though everyone from the president to the athletics department went along; just move on.
