God, how long ago was Obama's first inauguration?
I do feel the need to apologize a little bit. I remember I was being a downer, mainly because our nation, including many Democrats, were willing to let George W. Bush walk off the world stage without ever answering for his crimes. Many of you tried to cheer me up and realign my bearings with reassurances of Obama's impending administration. I appreciate you all for the pep talk.
And then I watched in horror as the Tea Party managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in 2010, emboldened by the disastrous rollout of the Affordable Care Act. I was consumed with losing my beloved ChickMagic, but thankful that she didn't have to endure this shit.
It took two years for Obama to lose Congress to the Republicans. Come to think of it, it also took only two years for Clinton to lose Congress as well.
And here I am, 17 days into a year that so far managed to eclipse 2020 in its magnitude of suckitude. COVID-19 cases have skyrocketed out of control - and despite masks, social distancing, and hand sanitizer, my girl and I came down with it anyway. We were both lucky. No hospitalization, no ventilators. Just plenty of bed rest and OTC meds. We are recovering.
Sandi is telling me that Riverside County, CA, is so overwhelmed by COVID-19 that ambulances aren't being dispatched anymore, not even for traffic accidents. Meanwhile, on the other coast, we've been treated to a week's worth of what the actual tap-dancing fuck is this spastic shit as Trump, apparently trying to obtain the coveted status of damnatio memoriae, unleashed a wave of insurrectionists, rioters, terrorists, QAnon freaks, and other useless fuckers at Capitol Hill as though Trump were the Wicked Witch of the West, sending forth a battalion of flying monkeys to reclaim his ruby sli...oops, I meant the Electoral College ballots.
Am I losing my mind here? Did they actually desecrate Capitol Hill like that?
But here's the bright spot in all this gloom. Even though the Democrats who have just taken Congress and the White House look and act a little too much like the Democrats of 1993 - a fact that has me worried in more ways than one - Democrats are finally beginning to fight back. This time, they're determined not to let Trump slip out the back door. And they're starting to ask a few pertinent questions about lawmakers who may have given tours of Capitol Hill to some of these anti-American fucknuts.
Suddenly, there's renewed hope that our Federal prisons may be filled with the right people after all.
And that brings me straight to Joe Biden. He was not my first choice. I'm already not happy with his decision to leave intact Trump's border wall. But I recognize that he is inheriting a nation in crisis, and the main thing Biden wants to do is restore some semblance of hope to those Americans who need it the most. We need the vaccines distributed efficiently and to those who need it the most. We've got to repair diplomatic relations with our real friends and allies. We've got to get America up and working again.
All of this while ensuring Republicans aren't back in the driver's seat within two years.
In other words, "A Republic, if you can keep it."
God bless Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, Charles Schumer, and everyone else. They've got a world of work ahead of them.
But this time, I'm optimistic that something will finally get done.
