The long-held Republican nightmare that a champion of working-class people and the common goodone who has dedicated his political career to curbing poverty and injustice while denouncing corporate greed, endless war, and the cruelty of a for-profit health system that leaves millions upon millions uninsured or without affordable access to carewould assume the powerful position of chairing the Senate Budget Committee is about to become reality.
"Time to face the harsh reality, socialist Bernie Sanders will become the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. He has vowed to use his position to enact his progressive agenda on healthcare, climate, infrastructure spending, and cutting defense spending," Nikki Haley tweeted Saturday.
Among the chief powers that the chair of the committee will be able to utilize is fostering legislation through the Senate using the budget reconciliation processa procedural tool that will allow, even under current rules, legislation to pass with a simple majority.
"Yes, we can and we must use budget reconciliation to increase the minimum wage to at least $15 an hour with a simple majority vote in the Senate, just like Republicans did to pass massive tax breaks to the 1%," declared Warren Gunnels, one of Sanders' most senior aides who went out of the way to identify himself as the "Incoming Majority Staff Director" for the "Senate Budget Committee" in a tweet Friday morning.

(34,661 posts)Senate Rules. Remember,Sanders is in full agreement with Joe and Kamala. Met Harris a couple times here in Vegas during Campaigns, she is not the waffle type. Ask her a question and she does not give you a stock response.
You will see the Impeachment as well as Senate business happen in real time on the same days. Interesting will be the new Senate Sessions calendar. Are we in for 7 day work sessions? Kinda think so.
Notice Lady G trying his best to muddy the waters today,he knows the Nation is about to take a mega swing to the left and the Klukkers are heading to the Stockade .

(523 posts).... is that, during the Trump regime, the Republicans were deaf, dumb, and blind to the ballooning federal deficit, which seemed completely invisible to Republicans.
Now that Biden is President, Republicans suddenly see the enormous Trump-caused deficit and will use that to try to cripple every Biden program.

(3,395 posts)was also a PROGRESSIVE, and one of the best presidents the USA has ever had. FDR may be 1st, followed by Teddy.
republicans avoid talking about Teddy Roosevelt because they know he was a progressive, so now they want to turn progressive into socialism. These people are such hypocrites.

(2,605 posts)based on his "Cross of Iron" speech by the current GOP and minions.
Say it ain't so, irrelevant former governor. Egads, money for health care. Please, not healthcare. We got used to expecting a new health care plan in two weeks, for more than 200 weeks. And we liked it that way. And dealing with climate change? Not that also?! You mean this radical, leftist, socialist administration will spend money to ensure that red southern states may not be destroyed by sea level rise? What next? Infrastructure? Surely you jest. Spending on highways, bridges, tunnels, and dams? Not that, surely. Does the evil of these radicals never end? It doesn't, you say? OMG, raising the federal minimum wage to $15/hour. No, not that. Then mere working people might be able to afford groceries. And rent. I can understand your opposition to that. I'll bet your fellow South Carolinians will oppose that. And thank goodness, I say.
Oh, and btw, you were irrelevant at the UN, you're irrelevant now. You shouldn't volunteer your idiotic thoughts on anything, and no one - I repeat, no one - should ask you for a quote on anything.

(58,785 posts)him to do a bunch of grandstanding, but in the end, senior or not, if he didn't further the Democratic agenda he'd be replaced. Rare, but not impossible. Also, since the committee will be half Republican, he has to get along with them too. Let's hope he's serious about producing. Cooperation and compromise will be required. He knows. He's been there a long time, that's how this happened.
One thing, as a committee chairman, even if he refuses to perform some of the traditional chair duties, he'll likely be working harder than he has since coming to DC. He'll no longer be a self-sidelined indie mainly criticizing and then voting for the product of Democrats.

(1,012 posts)... that their divisive, dog-whistling rhetoric is all they have, and needs to be called out no matter how trivial.
In 2017 I never heard anything like, "Time to face the harsh reality, fascist Mike Enzi will become the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee."
If they want unity, this would be a good place to start by not calling people something they do not call themselves. If they ever need to learn something from the last 4 years this would be a good place to start.

(12,816 posts)Why exactly do Republicans fear these things?
It's clear that a conservative agenda on these matters is not producing beneficial results, or there wouldn't be the massive deficiencies anyone can readily observe around them.

(6,917 posts)The position of not president for Bernie isnt a failure to win the presidency. Sure, its an election defeat, but him as Senate Finance chair is a perfect fit for his talents in 2021. With the exception of Elizabeth Warren, nobody is as perfectly suited and prepared for being a steward of U.S. finances in the Senate. Go Bernie.

(1,910 posts)Went to Great Clips this morning, elderly black lady cutting hair and me the only customer. An hour conversation about how terrifying the past 4 plus years have been since election night 2016. She says the young folks and women in her community say never again, never be disengaged, work with the Dems even if not at the pace they want.
The Repubs should NEVER be near the Presidency again. We have the demographic trends in every swing state along with a young and energetic group of new voters. Trump must be the peak of their sick reign and their power must decrease with each election cycle.
Repubs either moderate and join us, or forever be in the wilderness.
