Media outnumbers protesters at Michigan State Capitol

Michigan Capitol protest live updates: Armed protesters begin showing up

Updated 12:58 pm January 17, 2021

Armed demonstrations across America's state capitols are expected leading up to Wednesday's inauguration of Joe Biden as president, according to the FBI. That will include Michigan, where demonstrations could occur Sunday at the Lansing Capitol building. A self-described militia group was planning to show up, but the association — Southeast Michigan Militia — has since backtracked on those plans. The Michigan State Police has stepped up its visibility at the Capitol in Lansing after the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and after the FBI's warning.

Roughly 12 people — apparent members of the boogaloo movement — walked to the front of the Capitol at 12:25 p.m. to join the protest. The Lansing Police Department warned the public Saturday that a planned event was happening at noon Sunday. Currently, there are roughly 100 protesters, but they are still outnumbered by media members.

It's also kind of a crappy day here in Lansing--temperature 33F and spitting wet snow. Boo hoo.

They'll probably show up in droves tomorrow, MLK Day, just to spite BLM and King's legacy. Efilroft Sul Jan 2021 #1

I mean, most people don't get MLK Day off work, even though it is a national holiday. And boys (even Boogaloo and Proud) have bills to pay. If they can't generate a crowd on Sunday, are they really likely to do it on Monday? 🤔

If I was a betting woman, my money would be on "No." But I've been wrong before!
