I live in Southern Illinois where I have been teaching 600 students in person per week. To say I'm excited is an understatement!

(14,134 posts)And I am thankful because I see so many people in a day, including two different schools.
My parents are scheduled for April. They are 81 and 77. They don't go out much, and Dad has already had it and recovered thank God! My Uncle wasn't as fortunate. We lost him on New Year's Day.

(13,789 posts)... in congregate facilities. We are SO safe. We never get close to anyone except the super market clerk behind plexiglass for 5 minutes while wearing an N95 mask! Teachers are more at risk. My son is easy with it. His wife is an ICU physician, so they're living with it. But he says the staff at his school are wound tight as a violin string.

(65,289 posts)I'm 64, and I substitute science & math grades 6-12 as a retired scientist.
I have subbed 30 of the last 38 school days and our county survey has me at "too soon to schedule". If I can get the website to work.
So much for that.

(14,134 posts)Chalking up another reason I'm so glad I moved out of Indiana! Their governor doesn't think teachers need to be as high on the list.
Thank you Governor Pritzker!

(65,289 posts)The OP is from somewhere directly south. (We live in one of the collar counties.)
The priority is based on "essential" work and age.
65 & older matters. I'm 64.
Teachers, aides, admin, maintenance, security, and food service are essential, subs are not.
So during the colder months, I'm at school more than 60% of the time, and I'm 8 months from 65.
But, neither priority category applies to me.
Not meaning to be dismissive of the cafeteria folks, but subs have more direct contact with those hundred or 2 hundred or 8 hundred kids than the food service folks. I'm happy to see their on the list, but not sure how a sub isn't considered essential, too.
Ask any real teacher if they think good subs are essential.
Geez, I have teachers in multiple districts requesting me specifically. I must not suck!

(14,134 posts)That is a shame, because who has to take over if we get quarantined?
ProfessorGAC
(65,289 posts)Unvaccinated subs.
It's not like I'm a 34 year old between jobs.
Phase 1b is 65 & older and essential workers.
64 & 4 months is not 65, and subs are not essential.
And, I did 7 days HS physics when a teacher was quarantined when his college age son tested positive just before he came home for Thanksgiving. Tested Sunday night. Left for home late Monday morning, got a text Tuesday morning he was positive. Was around the whole family for 16 hours at that point. Whole family quarantined.
I did the Tuesday, the whole next week & the following Monday before teacher could come back.
A retired scientist teaching high school physics for a teacher in quarantine isn't essential.
Go figure.
