Republicans feel they are under political siege.

They feel existentially threatened.

It's not that they feel they have done nothing wrong. It's that they feel they could lose their power and their positions in government.

Their urge to survive supersedes all others at the moment.

They are defensive and have withdrawn to their corners.

They are looking for excuses and rationales for the behavior of Donald Trump.

They are torn by the question: Should they vote to convict or not?

Meaning “we will continue to do nothing” and remain on the wrong side of history taking place right before their eyes.

I hope they are terrified. What they should be worried about is their shrinking base.

Their perpetual feeling of victimhood is a big part of what drives them.

to start getting past Trump for 2024 is to vote to get him barred from running again, and to do that, 17 need to convict him in the Senate trial. They will be getting savage intimidatory pressure from Trumpers, and it may be the end of their political career for doing so.

If DON'T get him barred, he will keep the grift going on the pretence that he'll run in 2024, meaning they can't move on.
