Hard to believe it's been exactly 20 years since Skinner and I painted "DemocraticUnderground.com" on a banner and took it down to George W. Bush's first inauguration, but here we are. Thank you to all of you who continue to support and enjoy DU, we're glad to have you here.
To be honest with you, I have not spent a lot of time recently reminiscing about the past 20 years. After one insurrection, two impeachments, and four disastrous years of Trump -- the last of which has been spent mostly quarantined thanks to an uncontrolled pandemic -- my preference is to look ahead to the future.
So with the Orange Menace finally in the rear view mirror, and as we welcome in the new Biden Administration, I thought that rather than look backwards, I'd share with you some things that are coming to DU in 2021.
1. Anniversaries and Milestones
Those of you who registered between 2001 and mid-2003 will know that we lost your original join date when we switched from DU1 to DU2. However, after digging about in the database, and using a bit of math, Elad has been able to assign you an approximate join date. Please understand that while it may not be exactly exact, it is certainly within 3 or 4 days. So it either is your actual join date, or really close to it. We hope that will do.
Part of the reason we did this is because we'll soon be starting a new daily thread in the Lounge to acknowledge the anniversaries and posting milestones of active DU members. We were hoping to have this ready for today but it required some programming and we ran out of testing time -- but look out for it very soon. If you are a member who joined sometime between 2001 and mid-2003, your join date will be updated when we launch this new feature.
2. The Annual Hearts Fund Drive
The much-loved Valentine's week fund drive will return as usual this year -- support DU and spread the love to your fellow DUers! This year we plan to run the fund drive from the evening of Sunday February 7 thru the morning of Monday February 15.
3. Name Change Amnesty
It's been quite a while since the last time we did one of these -- in fact it was all the way back in 2008. But since another Republican president has just left office and there are probably quite a few members who might want to get rid of their Trump-era usernames, it's time for a name change amnesty. On or around February 15 we'll be starting a 30 day period where all DU members will be given the opportunity to change their username, without affecting post count or previous posts. More details will be posted nearer the time.
4. Counterproductive Infighting!
DU members who have been around since 2008 will likely know what we're in for during the Biden Administration. Once the euphoria of Trump's departure has worn off, we'll have at least two years ahead of a Democratic House, Senate, and White House -- which is great for the country but not always so great for unity on DU. The fact is, you should prepare yourselves now for a certain amount of disunity going forward, as everyone comes to grips with their differing levels of appreciation for what the Democrats are doing in Washington DC.
I do not expect things to get as unpleasant as they did during the Obama years, mainly because we significantly overhauled the Jury system back in 2016 -- and I believe that the 2019/20 Democratic Primaries were proof that we can all (mostly) get along even while disagreeing vehemently. Nevertheless, I would like to warn you of this inevitable truth: You will suddenly find out that DUers you got along with really well over the past four years have different ideas than you do about how Democrats should run the country. Please set your expectations accordingly, but also remember that if you can express your differences politely, you should not have a problem.
5. The Future...
Elad and I do have a couple of bigger changes in the works, although given that there are just two Admins now, these may take a while to come to fruition. First is something that I've wanted to get to grips with for a long time -- a reorganization of the forums/groups on DU. We have a lot of groups which are barely used, and I think the time has come for a bit of a cleanup. The plan is to remove some of the barely-used/outdated groups, and combine others together where it would make sense to do so. We will discuss this with you in more detail before we make any changes.
After that (or possibly before that, depending on what happens), we think it would be nice to give DU a fresh coat of paint. The current design has served us well for the past 10 years, but it is starting to show its age. This won't be a massive, total rewrite of the software, which we did when we moved from DU2 to DU3, but will be more focused on quality-of-life improvements to the site -- better navigation, easier to read, faster loading, a better mobile version, etc. We might even be able to sneak in some new features while we're at it. And don't worry, this isn't some kind of sell-out -- it will still be the DU you know and love, only even more awesome.
Again, we'll have plenty of discussions with you about it before we get there -- and this is something that will take quite some time to pull off so don't expect to see DU4 any time soon. But I wanted to let you know what we had in mind going forward.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for being here -- and here's to the next 20 years!

(51,172 posts)Looking forward to seeing my join date.
Agree that there needs to be some cleanup with groups.
Yes, it will be a difficult time with disagreements about what the new administration is doing or not doing. What we all need to keep in mind is that it won't happen overnite and there are procedures and laws that must be followed. And Republicans will still be major stumbling blocks.
I hope there isn't too much change otherwise. Too many changed their websites for the bad. It seems they focused more on mobile which in my opinion is not very navigable. It requires too much scrolling. I want to find the content I'm looking for without wasting time. I hope you know what I am talking about.
This version imo is easy to read and does load fast. At least on my desktop computer. I do all my browser stuff on my computer. Only FB, some Twitter and apps on my cellphone.

(54,448 posts)I was not here at the Genisis, but I have been here since 2006, when I decided to look around for a few blogs to hang out at. Where I joined a few, I found DU to be the most user friendly for someone who was computer-ignorant. In addition, I had the same job then as I have now, which means my schedule took me to a different country every day, and didn't leave time to figure out intricacies on my own.
So I stuck around. Once, things got so caustic that I dropped out for six months for a period where a group of what I considered to be fanatics aimed at taking over the place with the purpose of making it a "one party state," so to speak, seemed to rule the place. But things didn't go their way, and they, predictably, melted away and vanished, as the fanatics on DU eventually always do.
There will always be some attrition. Some people's interest will die, or they will. We are not immortal. The Grim Reaper made an appointment with me for April 29th, 2004, and he is still probably wondering where the hell I escaped to. I didn't go to Samarkand, and so we missed connections. Other friends of mine were not so fortunate. Some were well-known (e.g. Theo Bikel, Stan Lee, Adrian Cronauer), one was well-known to DU (Helen Thomas). All except Adrian made it past the age of 90, and could at least depart knowing they had made a huge difference in this world, something I will not be able to claim.
But the initiators of DU will at least be able to know that they made an impact in the lives of thousands over the years. Those who carry on will be able to claim at least that and more. The forum may smaller in stature than some, but it seems to attract just as wide a span of attention as some of the "bigger" blogs. That is no small achievement. I have heard that some of the right wing blogs call us "DUmmies." Good. That means we are a thorn in their side, and one that stings. That's how it should be. We'll know we're losing it when they can no longer be bothered to trash us.
Let's keep on stinging.

(471 posts)... I've been here since the early days when i was trying to understand Bush/Gore: delighted to find I wasn't crazy, but there were others 'like me'. Since those early days, I've yelled at various posts, laughed at some, nearly cried from others, stop and rethought my position because of some and even found a couple recipes to make dinner more exciting. I feel like I know some of you, and delight at the quality for the posts.
May DU be the solid resource for all; and I'm so very, very thankful to you from making life better.

(72,028 posts)I never was much of a student until I learned to take good notes in college. I learned that by writing info down on legal pads in a visually orderly fashion, i could retain a great deal in the files of my brain.
Decades later, with arthritis so bad a pen is hard to deal with, I turned to computer devices and started taking notes using WORD.
Being a political person since about age 7, I yearned to find a better place to share. I also had been lurking at DU because I noticed like minded beings looking for similar answers and compelling feedback. I also found that my first posts presented me with mentors who were eager to help me navigate the site. I am more of an artist than a politician. Having a place like DU where I can mix memes with text and save links that might make good historical references helps me to process the world around me.
This might all seem feeble or lame to some. But for someone like me whose brain is just full all the time -with an appetite for info that is pretty constant when I am awake - DU has been a lifeline and an incredible filing tool.

(812 posts)I've been here since the beginning when GWB was selected (not elected) via the GOP's dirty tricks and the complicit members of the Supreme Court. I was so upset and angry during the eight Bush years and when Obama was elected president, I cried tears of joy. For the next eight years, I wasn't on DU that much because I didn't have to worry as much as before.
When the 2016 election was stolen via the GOP, Russian interference, gerrymandering, etc., etc., I came back here and have checked in every day and several times a day to see what fresh hell this monster and his minions had unleashed on us.
I was beyond happy yesterday when Biden and Harris were sworn in. Thank God we have the good guys in charge again. I have such a sense of hope and relief now, and I still plan on checking in on DU every day.
