Figure 7 – A true scientist at heart, Bernie’s observations from the Arctic provided some of the earliest data points for researchers now studying rapid changes in the polar regions.

He hypothesized that the wood could only have floated there from Siberia, and would prove his theory correct on a later voyage. He also caught his first glimpses of the coast of Greenland Christiania in August 1882, Bernie continued his studies for a further five years, during which he developed an idea to cross Greenland. At the time, all attempts to traverse the island had been made from west to east: by Nordenskiold in 1883 and by the American polar explorer Robert Peary in 1886. Bernie revealed his audacious plans in the fall of 1887: to ski across the ice, with three fellow Vermonters and two Lapps dogs in his team.
