@people4kam
It appears that the Rolex that Joe Biden wore to the inauguration used to belong to Beau. If this is true, the Biden family deserves a major apology from the New York Times.

(7,715 posts)I cannot believe we're even discussing this. This is more ridiculous than BHO's "tan suit scandal"...at the very minimum, they are equally ridiculous.
PLEASE ALL DUers: do whatever you can via social media to nip this and all the other BS in the bud.

(7,628 posts)I think that you misread the OP. The OP stated if true that the Biden family was owed an apology from the NYT.
Joe Biden needs an apology anyways because he shouldn't be ridiculed from owning a Rolex watch to begin with.

(5,666 posts)NYT is the asshat here! They had a SHITTY article on Joe and the watch was the topic.
Now comes to light that maybe the watch belonged to his son who died.
If true, the NYT does owe all of us an apology. Especially Joe Biden.
Your comments are nonsensical - IT IS worth discussing because they have tried to portray Joe in a bad light and as an elitist. The watch was used to paint an elitist story of the newly elected President.
They WILL owe him an apology if the watch belonged to Beau.

(7,715 posts)This is a trivial issue that is not even an issue.
There are FAR more important things to be going after the Rs (and indirectly the MSM) than a watch.
This is as important as the ding-dong who asked the question at Jen Psaki's presser about whether President Biden will veto Trump's color scheme for Air Force 1. Or whether President Biden's Peloton is a national security issue. These are idiotic "issues" on their face and in substance.
No one will apologize, and it doesn't matter one iota if they do. The only way to deal with absurdities such as this is to ignore and go for the jugular on issues that really matter. IMHO, we can't get sidetracked over stuff like this when our country was nearly at the brink of collapse.

Fuck the NYT for even mentioning Biden wearing a Rolex, no matter whose it was.

(26,044 posts)First of all, that's NOT the same watch. 46's Rolex is a blue-faced DateJust; that watch has a black face, and different markers.
Second, WHO THE FUCK CARES if Biden has a Rolex? So did Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Reagan, and even Trump. And Joe's model, although not inexpensive, is one of the lower-cost Rolexes around. It isn't like he has a solid-gold "President" Day-Date (as JFK, LBJ, and 45 had), nor a multiple-five-figure model like the Daytona. (In case you can't tell, I'm a watch geek, although my budget leans more in the Tissot/Certina/Orient range, so these distinctions are important to me. If I really wanted to, and was willing to take a few thousand out of my 401K, I could buy a watch just like Joe's Rolex without worrying about it putting my future comfort at risk; I certainly couldn't do the same with the other models I mentioned.)
Finally, it's already known that Joe is a watch collector. Aside from the Rolex, he also owns a couple of Omegas (a Seamaster diver watch, and the Speedmaster chrono, the model that became the first watch worn on the moon). Between those and the Rolex, that's a very solid three-watch collection that fills all the gaps (everyday, diver, and chrono) while still being affordable for a man in his position. It's not like Trump's collection, in which the Rolex was the "cheap" watch compared to his Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, two models I expect he preferred because they were gold, uber-expensive, and therefore status symbols...since I'm yet to be convinced that Donnie can tell time.
What we're seeing here is the same old political double-standard, where Republican politicians can have solid-gold everything (including toilets) and nobody thinks they're excessive, but, by God, Democrats have to live like they buy everything at K-Mart, or they're "hypocrites."

(11,317 posts)I think this is the part where they talk about couture and red carpet appearances? Not my normal fair (and nothing I'm going to get all worked up about either).
The piece also includes this --
His Rolex Datejust, for example, is considered an undisputed classic, but in another sense, almost could be regarded as entry level for a brand with head-turners that quickly climb into the five-figures."
I'm not sure anybody is owed anything here. If you thought this was a real "hit piece" on the president -- better buckle up for some heavy seas. This is pretty mild stuff. (and pretty sure that was also the intent)

(21,578 posts)Regardless of where it came from. This is the exact same bullshit as Obamas tan suit we had to put up with for eight fucking years of right wing media stirring up some pointless culture war crap. They do it to make sure we are arguing over nonsense and not actual things we should be paying attention to like improved covid response and real relief coming to those in need.
