(7,432 posts)There's always "Russia Today", but that sounds like fake news.

(101,321 posts)While they're no longer based in Russia, that's because it's gotten near impossible to be an independent site there without Putin cracking down on you.

(101,321 posts)The Moscow Times currently belongs to a limited liability company which is 51% owned-by Vladimir Dzhao, the CEO of an airline catering company, 30% by Svetlana Korshunova, general director of the paper, and 19% by Derk Sauer, the original founder of the paper. Speaking to Kommersant, Derk Sauer explained that this is merely to comply with a Russian law which prohibits foreigners from controlling more than 20% of any Russia-based media company, since Mr. Sauer is a Dutch citizen. He further said that Vladimir Dzhao is an old friend of his, and "he does not control the publication, he is a partner".[1][15][16]

It seems the day-to-day control still happens from Moscow.

(54,408 posts)Hes back in Germany now but goes back frequently, and his Russian girlfriend still lives there. She speaks only Russian, so she has no interest in moving away from Russia.
He said that all major news outlets are by now firmly in Putins hands, or might as well be since they know that the slightest report that Putin might not like will get them shut down. The radio station, Эхо Москвы, or The Echo of Moscow, is the only station that dares to skirt the line, but never crosses it. I have no idea if they have an English language service. When I was visiting him in Russia, we listened only to the Russian local station.

(7,510 posts)They aren't influenced by the Russian government, they are close enough to Russia to be well informed, and they don't have the anti-Russian bias common to US and UK news outlets.
