NEW YORK -- For the first time since 1983, when Anheuser-Busch used all of its ad time to introduce a beer called Bud Light, the beer giant isn't advertising its iconic Budweiser brand during the Super Bowl. Instead, it’s donating the money it would have spent on the ad to coronavirus vaccination awareness efforts.

Anheuser-Busch still has four minutes of advertising during the game for its other brands including Bud Light, Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade, Michelob Ultra and Michelob Ultra Organic Seltzer. Those are some of its hottest sellers, particularly among younger viewers.

But the decision to not do an anthemic Budweiser ad — which over nearly four decades has made American icons of frogs chirping “Budweiser,” guys screaming “Whassup!”, and of course the Budweiser Clydesdales — showcases the caution with which some advertisers are approaching the first COVID-era Super Bowl.

“We have a pandemic that is casting a pall over just about everything,” said Paul Argenti, Dartmouth College professor of corporate communication. “It’s hard to feel the exuberance and excitement people normally would.”

That the patriarchal "take it by force" sport of football feeds toxic masculinity in mouth breathers?

Guessing not.

No offense to football fans here.

Both playing and watching.

I don't know any who are "mouth-breathers."

about science, not politics. I think in a way this is a demonstration of support for the Biden Administration, unity and establishing the Truth (with a capital T) again: COVID exists, it is a cold hard fact not subject to debate.

I wonder if they would have been so willing to do this if Trump had been re-elected. My guess is no. Because if Trump was still president, COVID would still be "political."

5. The NFL has become a watered-down product anyway

Basically, it's become a game of quarterbacks and wide receivers only, as the NFL intended, to "liven up" the game and increase scoring.

But I gotta respond with DEFENSE!! Yesterday’s games had some awesome defensive plays, turnovers and drive stopping stands! Go D!

I do not hold your view on QB and WR statement...

Truth is, I didn't start drinking until I was probably 14, but who's counting?

Playing contact sports during a pandemic is absurd. In fact, playing non-contact sports like basketball is absurd as well. I caught a few minutes of a college basketball game Saturday, the coaches pulled off their masks to yell or issue instructions to the players. Just throw the damn masks away and be honest about it, rather than pulling those stunts. A half million or more Americans are going to die because we just couldn't do the right things. We have shown that parties, sports, bars and other entertainment is more important than life itself. Darwinism in action.
