1. He is delusional. He may think he could be re-installed as President.

He's wrong of course, but that's delusions for you.

Now that the orange menace is out of the White House and has no platform for his nonsense, he is far less dangerous. The people who supported him in his delusional thinking, however are still out there. They just have no leader any longer.

They will, however, find a new one who is equally delusional, though, I'm sure.

2. I'm not sure there is anyone else to replace Trump

and that's a good thing.

This idiot has been nationally and internationally famous since the mid-1980s and, to some degree, mastered the art of self-promotion, giving the illusion he was a multi-billionaire and the world's shrewdest businessperson. That continued in the 1990s and into the 21st century. Pretty much everyone knew Donald Trump.

I don't think there is another fascist around who has those credentials. And those "credentials" are what helped give Trump a veneer of credibility to many people, including non-wacko Republicans and independents.

That being said, mastery of social media and/or control of MSM seems to be a defining hallmark of these despots. I suppose it is possible that a much smarter fascist than Trump who knows how to play mindgames and gaslight with social media could command their own version of a cult of deplorables.

Always. We need to be alert to spot them before they gain power.

4. Senators must decide: Do you want to establish yourself as believing the insurrection was okay?

?

Adam Schiff should bring his "you might say that's all okay" speech up to date to include the many, much more serious, offenses that Trump committed since Rep. Schiff delivered first version:

Says Trump and the infighting he is causing among ReTHUGs is great for Dems.
May be true but it isn't good for the country.

7. I'm thinking long term, because if he's convicted and barred from running again, it will actually be

a win for the GOP, allowing them to blame the Democrats and then sweep everything under the carpet. You saw how they twisted Joe's "Unity" speech, they'll do the same again. No, better for them to own this all the way to the end, imo. There's no contrition for what they did, and continue to do, and while they control the RW media world, there is no other way to get through to 74m voters.

If attempting to overthrow the legislative branch to guarantee a second term for yourself isn't a high crime, what is? Sometimes law and order has to supersede political interests.
This trial is deadly serious.

it's just that to bar Trump from running again will only store this up for the next time the GOP try this with, and as we keep saying, an intelligent Trump. Convicting someone who has already left office is meaningless. Barring him from running again, saves the GOP. It does nothing for the Democratic Party, worse in fact, as they will face a more "acceptable" Republican in 2024, and the Republicans will never have had to face their responsibility for the last 4 years.
