WHOAH --> Portman won't run for re-election in 2022
Ohio's U.S. Sen. Rob Portman won't run for re-election; Republican cites 'partisan gridlock'
U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, perhaps the most powerful politician from Greater Cincinnati outside of the Taft family, will not seek a third term in 2022.

(2,281 posts)The Enquirer caved in and gave money to the Lindner family after an expose about Chiquita bananas showed them for the near slave labor that they were.
The reporter wanted to fight using Zenger (truth) defense.
Lindner threatened to pull all ads from the Reds, UDF, the bank he owned at the time and had promises from every prominent republican that their business would cancel all ads with the paper. So, they caved. Printed a retraction t o a true story.
They always give a pro-Republican slant ---

(19,069 posts)First midterm after an election is usually bad for the sitting President's party. But all of the cards are aligned up right for a great Dem midterm. Expanding the lead in the Senate is all but assured at this point. Get Trump supporters to stay home and the House lead could grow significantly too. And if we stay motivated we could sweep to wins in a lot of states.
The news likes to talk about the new Trump voters that were brought into the political process, but what about 81 million Biden voters. We saw 10 million or more new voters vote Dem, keeping these people engaged for 2022 is the key to everything. I think there's a real chance Trump supporters sit 2022 out entirely, it's all rigged after all.
81 million isn't being talked about enough, there's a chance that Dem voter drives have permanently altered the electorate. 2022 could look like a blowout win for the Dems.

(19,069 posts)And almost every special election off season in the last 4 years. When Trump isn't on the ballot, his voters stay home.
2022 can still be an election about Trump for Dems if we play it right. Without Trump engaged, what will be the message from Republicans that turns out the votes they need?

(11,257 posts)Trump's refusal to do even the bare minimum with respect to the pandemic means that all of Biden's efforts will be noticeable, particularly when it comes to the vaccine. That means every temporary vaccine site constructed by FEMA, ending the vaccine shortage, more available PPE, etc. People will see that elections do matter because all of these steps will directly impact their lives.

He may be implicated in the coup attempt as well.

(15,334 posts)My home state used to be sane, but that changed a long time ago.
Gerrymandering to skew power to white, racist shitholes, nonstop Hate Radio saturation, fracking...it has all turned Ohio into West Virginia with a side of Kentucky thrown in.
I was shocked that Sherrod Brown was able to hang on.
It just pisses me off. When Retrumplicans gain control of a state like Ohio or Wisconsin, they go about surgically carving it up so they can ensure 85% of elected representation with only 48% of the vote.
Democrats gain control of a state and create a "commission" to create a "fair" electoral map.
It's one of the things that makes me proud to be a Democrat, but jealous that I'm not a Retrumplican.
