https://thehill.com/changing-america/resilience/smart-cities/535659-in-huge-step-california-governor-will-lift-stay-atSeems like Newsom is reacting to the recall effort against him which is now gaining real momentum. Is it enough to save him at this point? There are so many "RECALL NEWSOM" signs in my city now.

(5,229 posts)doing it because the virus is lessening or for political reasons? A real leader would be more concerned about the people rather than political expediency.

(30,613 posts)they are actually killing more decent people than they are meeting their own well-deserved ends.
Newsom is wrong here. Californians will pay for his weakness.

(32,864 posts)There has been 0% ICU beds in my county since right after thanksgiving. Today we have 6 beds available in the entire county. The cities that failed to enforce are the problem. The testing has been a fail and the vaccine rollout in this county has been an even bigger disaster. There was never leadership. If youre not going to enforce a rule its idiotic to make the rule to begin with.

(7,814 posts)dynamics...public health, economy, education, etc., more so than the individual. Which is too bad...the publicly available info leaves out a lot of things that an individual would need to know to stay healthy. If you're an individual that really doesn't want infection then don't go dine with others outdoors, go to a salon, to movies, and so on. Research. Don't just follow headlines by officials.
in terms of public health and hospital capacity, I don't see why we should relax right now with the new variant coming on and with the high numbers of new cases....but the numbers reflect infections from two weeks ago and perhaps Newsom has more info than we do on trends this morning. Hope so. OTOH, France just said that only premium masks should be used. And Mexico is doing really badly now.
In our house, we will continue to be super careful until vaccinated or until new case numbers drop dramatically. Even then....

The trends are getting better and they can see about 4 weeks out, more people are not needing critical care, there are no big holidays on the horizon, etc.
If they were to release the data my guess is that their concern is that people will start slipping up on distancing, mask wearing, restaurant seating, etc.
The restrictions that were in place before the lockdown still stand in most instances and counties should be following those guidelines for their areas.
Newsom is allowing restaurants to serve again (with outdoor seating) and salons to open with restrictions. L.A. County is another matter and we may not get the stay-at-home order lifted because of how bad it is here but the numbers may be trending the same.
He can rescind the order at anytime if things start going in the wrong direction. He has always said he would do this.
