Some senators oppose part of Biden's stimulus plan because they claim it gives too much money to the

wealthy

Some senators are pushing back on President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion economic rescue package over concerns that it provides too much money to wealthy Americans, according to a report from Politico.

The bipartisan group of senators, led by Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, expressed their concerns in a phone call with the Biden administration on Sunday, Politico reported.

The group of 16 senators reportedly told White House officials that they were in favor of increasing funds for vaccine distribution but felt the proposed $1,400 direct payments should be reserved for low-income Americans.

Collins specifically questioned why families making $300,000 could be eligible for payments, Politico reported.

While six-figure earners could qualify for the stimulus checks, the amount of the payments decreases as income increases, meaning they would not receive the full $1,400 amount.

Any other time, we'd be against people making that much receiving a stimulus check. Sounds like an easy compromise to make.

the phaseout is already a fairly high marginal rate. A single person at 75k now faces 5% plus the current 22% for income up to that 99k at which it phases out. That is higher than that being paid on income between 100k and 160k

and remember, that is last years income, not this years. So if a person who made say 85k last year, is now making whatever UI would be for him or her, they get nothing until they file taxes if we don't let them get a check.

that was new to me. I thought it phazed out at roughly $100K or $200K for a family.

In any event, I do not see the justification for people still employed making over $100 K to get a "stimulus" check when people unemployed and/or making $40K a year get the same thing. It's really that simple.

How many families are above the $300,000 line? This is going to "low and middle income people." The GOP simply will not admit that there are wealthy, ultra wealthy, or uber-ultra wealthy people who will not pay their fair share of taxes, but will pay lawyers to cheat and discover loop holes.

67% of American families make less than $100K. 53% less than $75K. Seems it phases out at the right cut off, and is gone for the 1/3 who hold 2/3 of the nations wealth.

Fake outrage.

the money. These "loans" (which can be forgiven, so they're actually subsidies, not loans) were supposed to go to small businesses to help them maintain payroll payments and keep from having to lay off employees. Instead, millions of dollars in PPP loans went to large businesses and billionaires who did not need the money.

From the LA Times:

Congressional investigators say they have identified lapses pointing to possible fraud and abuse in the Trump administration’s coronavirus relief program, including more than $1 billion awarded to small businesses that received multiple loans.

A report, issued Tuesday by a House subcommittee, says a lack of government oversight and accountability for the $600-billion-plus program “may have led to billions of dollars being diverted to fraud, waste and abuse, rather than reaching small businesses truly in need.”

And from NBC News:

Billionaire property developer Joe Farrell, a prominent Republican fundraiser, received up to $1 million in taxpayer coronavirus relief funds, according to federal data released Monday.

Other players in the world of celebrity and influence who took advantage of loans under the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, to help struggling small businesses hurt by coronavirus shutdowns included Kanye West's $3 billion clothing and sneaker company, multimillionaire pop artist Jeff Koons and three branches of the Church of Scientology, which is reported to be worth at least $1 billion.

"PPP was sold to the American people as a program to help Mom-and-Pop shops keep their lights on during the pandemic," Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US, a government watchdog group, said by email. "The reality is that the Trump administration created a program that helped the well connected cut to the front of the line to get these loans."
