I hate to admit this, but...

When the news broke about Leahy being hospitalized, my first thought was that republicans had done something to him. I truly hate being that jaded, but damned if they haven't earned that kind of cynicism.

Sen. Patrick Leahy taken to hospital out of abundance of caution after presiding over opening of Trump's impeachment trial

CNN)Sen. Patrick Leahy was hospitalized out of an abundance of caution on Wednesday, just hours after presiding over the opening of former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial.

"This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well. He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician," his spokesperson David Carle said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated."

4. If that were true it would accomplish nothing.

If he were unable to preside over the trial, then someone else would be sworn in to preside over the trial.

If he were unable to continue serving as senator, a special election would be held and in the interim a temporary replacement would be named. The governor of Vermont, a republican, has stated he would only appoint someone from the same party as the sitting senator if a seat became vacant.
