Children's ID tags unearthed at Nazi death camp in Poland

They reveal the tragic history of the Sobibor death camp.

Archaeologists have unearthed the identity tags of four children murdered by the Nazis at Sobibor death camp in eastern Poland.

Each metal tag is different and was likely given to the children by their parents prior to being separated from them. The parents may have hoped the ID tags would help the children be returned home, according to Yoram Haimi, an archaeologist at the Israel Antiquities Authority, who is part of a team excavating the site.

"Every small artifact that we have brings a story. It's the story of the community from where they came to Sobibor," Haimi, whose uncle was killed at the camp, told Live Science.

The team unearthed the other three tags between 2012 and 2014 in the camp's "killing area," which contained the gas chamber, crematorium and a mass grave. The tags belonged to 8-year-old Deddie Zak, 12-year-old Annie Kapper and 11-year-old David Juda Van der Velde, who were murdered by the Nazis in 1943. Only half of David Juda Van der Velde's tag was found, and it shows signs of fire damage. "The Germans burned his body and on his neck was this tag," Haimi said.

Arrive, straight to the gas chambers, or vans before that. No selection, no labor, no camp, really. Just mass production of death.

5. Sobidor was the only death camp that had a mass escape

By the victims who were allowed to live and be the camp slaves. Because of this, the camp was razed and "disappeared." Although many of the escaped victims were killed by bullet or landmine, many also survived. One of them, Esther Rabe, was the neighbor of my college roommate.

That a phrase could describe a real place is enough to drive a human being mad. But they were very real places.

12. The blackest of black humour

Came from a man who was a callow, 14 or 15 year old Russian at Sobibor. One of the few hundred kept as slave labourers in the death factory. He was interviewed for the documentary series, "Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution".

The escape planners had hidden him with an axe in the SS tailor's shop, intending to lure in an SS officer with the promise of a new piece of finery.

"When his back was turned, I hit him with the axe", he shrugged. "But no-one told me it should be the flat side of the axe. There was blood everywhere".

I'm glad there is a forensic archaeological dig taking place at Sobibor. After the SS tried to eliminate all traces of Sobibor and Treblinka, there was little proof of their existence. Ten years ago Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls was given permission to carry out a dig at the Treblinka site - the first since the war. She established proof of extermination facilities and in doing so became one of the scourges of holocaust deniers.
