Shes about 20 years older than me. She keeps telling me when I hit my mid 30s I'll be conservative. I responded with you said that when I hit my mid 20s I would be. Still wasn't, then you said I would be when I hit my 30s. Still didn't happen. So now you're saying my mid 30s? And when that doesn't happen. Are you gonna push it back like QAnon keeps pushing back the great plan? That pissed her off pretty quickly.
This argument started because I began HRT and she thinks I'm mentally ill.

(15,389 posts)And apparently my brother-in-law's step-dad never got the message. He has what I call a televangelist smile - holier-than-thou smirk and thinks through some sort of combination of being old and religious, he's always right. I was crashing after Thanksgiving dinner when he thought he could ambush me - I'm the most outspoken liberal in the family, and my sister and his stepson are the most conservative so we run the gamut. I can't remember what it was, but because I do read about politics incessantly I basically Gish-Galloped him, first explaining that whatever he said to me was the FOX News version of things, then explained what the actual version was, and then explained why the actual version was actually a good thing. I finished and leaned my head back on the couch and closed my eyes but kept them open a little, and the smirk disappeared from his face, and he stalked off.

(32,086 posts)I have noticed that in my sisters, as well. They're way more liberal than they were 20 years ago. Only my brother has gotten right-wing looney with age, but he's a special case. Retired law enforcement. They fucked him up good. He wasn't raised that way.

(9,952 posts)wouldn't get along with her. I did. Then she said I was just running a couple years late, and at 18 told her, still didn't happen.
So, it is funny but irritating someone thinking they can define you

(2,218 posts)I grew up my entire life hearing about conservative values. I decided to list them. That was nearly fifty years ago. I still can't name a single virtue that conservatives will put above their own personal convenience.

(54,436 posts)I am your classic conservative, at least as defined in a dictionary of the English language (as opposed to Republicanese).
I still work for the same outfit that recruited me out of college in 1975. I have been with the same wonderful woman since 1974. We have raised two solid, intelligent children who have grown up, think independently, did well in their respective colleges, and have jobs in which they earn their own living, have stable, long-term relationships, and are well-respected in their chosen fields.
I am risk-averse, and do not like to make rash, un-thought-out decisions. I have no debts. I have no addictions, not even to alcohol, religion, gambling, or nicotine. My favorite American philosopher is the 18th century Thomas Jefferson.
I am the epitome of conservative. Why am I a Democrat? Simple: I do not believe that having a different ethnic background, belief, or income makes one a superior or an inferior being to myself.
On Fox Noise or National Hate Radio, and in the right wing print press, a "Conservative" means a right-wing Republican. But just like wading into the ocean doesn't make you a fish, Republicans hijacking the term "conservative" (small c) doesn't mean they get to re-write the dictionary.

(31,039 posts)My older brother is like that. He is a solid liberal Democrat. Me, I have many regrets but Ive always been a liberal. Maybe because Ive always had sympathy for the oddball. I remember my first political stance was when I wrote an essay in school against capital punishment. I have never wavered on that position. Thanks for your story. I really have a hard time understanding these right wing nuts.

(54,436 posts)My views havent changed much since then.
I have one cousin in Tennessee who I hear is a rabid Republican, but I havent seen him since 1994. The rest of my side of the family is a solid wall of Democrats. My wifes side is either solid Merkel wing of the CDU (her parents generation) or SPD with some Grüne/Bündnis 90 thrown in.
Any political discussions are usually over headlines, since most of our opinions are dully in agreement. Among us all, there is one who likes fancy meals and vacations while making the least money. That person has blown much of what they got in the way of a modest inheritance, and is now living off of stimulus money. The rest of the American side of my family is solidly Biden/Obama/Clinton, depending upon in which decade you asked them.

I still find the old saying to be true: walking inside a church doesn't make you a Christian any more than walking inside a garage makes you a car.

(58,785 posts)Personality is genetically linked and we're born leaning liberal or conservative, though a few may be "other." Effects of "nurture" on development of personality, and thus on formation of sociopolitical attitudes, are believed to usually be stronger, though.
Short form, conservatives are us, every bit as much as liberals are. We, all of us, need to put a stop to the kind of mass mindfucking that can corrupt and weaponize whole demographics. QAnon, which can infect both conservative and liberal minds, is teaching people in dozens of nations that can be done on a huge scale, without confusing the issue with a political party label.
