As Santa Clara County works to boost its COVID-19 vaccinations by expanding sites to get a shot, information released during a Public Safety meeting this week shows that of the sheriff’s deputies and staff, 48% declined the vaccine when asked.

“Mind-boggling number,” said Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, who was shocked because it includes a large chunk of deputies working in the jail system.

“I am a little bit speechless,” she said. “We can’t significantly reduce or eliminate outbreaks in the jail if every day we have people coming into the jail who haven’t been vaccinated.”

The sheriff’s office says some declined for medical reasons, or said they had COVID-19 recently and believe they’re protected -- others are hesitant.

Without pay until they cooperate with the mandate. This is belligerent willful ignorance. Especially if those who refuse have no valid exclusionary health circumstances.

They don't just put themselves at risk, but that affects everyone else they come into contact with, potentially infecting hundreds of people in their wake. The resulting costs to state and local govt is a totally unnecessary drain on taxpayer's money.

Prisoners can't protect themselves and they don't deserve to be unnecessarily exposed to corid 19 because the idiot cops are having a tantrum. Co-workers, staff and visitors have no way of knowing these jerks aren't vaccinated, and maybe they've relaxed their guard thinking they were all safe.

Are crazy political associations involved? Do they think only Dems are smart enough to get vaccinated and they don't want any of their fellow zombie cops to mistake them for an adult with a brain? Shame on them for putting their families at risk!
