(1,850 posts)NYPD Disciplines Officer Seen
Wearing Pro-Trump Patches While On Duty
BY DAVID CRUZ
FEB. 6, 2021 4:06 P.M.
The NYPD is investigating an officer seen on video openly wearing two patches that appear to be supporting former President Donald Trump, with one of those patches reading "Make Enforcement Great Again".
On Saturday Twitter, the department tweeted that it's "aware of a video showing one of our members wearing a politically oriented patch" and that the officer "has already received an initial discipline." But the NYPD did not elaborate on that discipline.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea also followed up with his own tweet, saying "Members of the NYPD must remain apolitical its essential to public trust & officers ability to perform their jobs."
The officer, whose last name is Martillo according to their badge ID seen in the video, was part of a group of officers responding to a protest rally outside Brooklyn's 84th Precinct Friday evening. The demonstration was organized in support of a move to fire one of the precinct's officers, Artem Prusayev, whom protesters reportedly claimed had pointed a gun them as they demanded he wear a mask during protest last month.

Apparently there are several instances of (NYPD) police who are not adhering to policy. But the PBA endorsed 45, so they figure it's ok. It's not! But as long as they do so in uniform, their badges will allow them to be identified.

(18,305 posts)Those photos show a closeup of a nameplate that says "Martillo" with a badge number 2415.
According to capstat, Dana Martillo's badge number is 25835.

(1,850 posts)The NYPD did identify her by name. She's the only Martillo on the force.
Wonder if the badge was switched by accident (she put on her fake badge by mistake) or on purpose (she meant to use her fake badge). After I posted I read that her name tag had been visible in some of the photos. And there was mention of a discrepancy in the badge number.
Doubt we'll find out what happened there, but would love to know.
There was a previous thread here about it, and someone reported the badge number didn't belong to anyone, so where did her phony badge come from? Is that a thing?
Here's a link to that thread.

The name plate and badge number were visible in a photo on telegram that was reposted to twitter. In addition, Dana Martillo is assigned to the transit division according to capstat. The patch on the the jacket sleeve above the sergeant stripes in the telegram photo is not the transit division patch.

(18,305 posts)It might be that only police who have had complaints/lawsuits against them are in those data bases. That would mean that there might be other Martillos on the force. This might be why news organizations are not naming the cop.
It could also be that the data bases are out of date with their information on Dana Martillo who might have a new shield number and is no longer with the transit division.
The NYT reported several years ago that many cops have duplicates of their badges because losing the official badge is a big deal, but a dupe badge would have the real shield number on it.
Wearing the obnoxious mask and patches would be relatively minor uniform violations compared to wearing a counterfeit badge with an inaccurate shield number.
