https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/breakthrough-drug-might-cure-covid-in-just-five-days/ar-BB1ds8Rk* Researchers from Tel Avivs Ichilov Medical Center developed a coronavirus therapy that was found to cure COVID-19 in 3-5 days in most volunteers who received the drug.
* EXO-CD24 is a medication delivered directly to the lungs, where itll help prevent the immune system dealing with COVID-19 from overreacting and causing complications.
* The drug is administered once a day for five minutes via inhalation. In Phase 1 trials, 29 out of 30 people suffering from moderate to severe COVID-19 recovered within 3-5 days, and all of them survived.
Its too early to call it a miracle cure, but if the conclusions from a recent Phase 1 trial for a new drug called EXO-C24 are backed up in subsequent trials, we might have the first true breakthrough therapy for COVID-19.
Thats in addition to coronavirus vaccines, of course, which will help prevent severe COVID-19 cases and deaths, and even reduce the spread of the illness. But while vaccines can give the immune system a heads-up to the threat it might have to deal with the real virus they have a few limitations. First of all, they dont work on infected people. Secondly, vaccine supply is still limited and vaccinations arent available to anybody who might want one. Then theres the threat of coronavirus mutations that might reduce vaccines effect on the virus and extend the pandemic.
But if EXO-C24 can indeed help most coronavirus patients recover within five days, then the drug would not just save more lives. It would also complement vaccines and help address mutations. The drug is meant to calm the immune response that can be deadly in COVID-19 the so-called cytokine storms and should have the same effect regardless of how SARS-CoV-2 evolves.

Wow. Let's keep our eyes on the trials to see if this drug can be another tool in the kit to fight CV-19.

(51,662 posts)The real difference is that none of the 30 died. And the 29 who recovered did so within 5 days, which is huge.

(201 posts)The problem with COVID-19 recovery is that the immune system can develop an exacerbated reaction in at-risk groups, leading to multiple organ failure and death. The phenomenon is called a cytokine storm, and its usually deadly.
The hospital conducting the Phase 1 trial described the success as a huge breakthrough, according to Time of Israel.
EXO-C24 isnt an anti-viral that goes after the virus, looking to eliminate it. The immune system can do that on its own, and thats why many people recover from COVID-19 even without treatment. This drug deals with the cytokine storm, preventing the overreaction from taking place.

It uses exosomes tiny carrier sacs that shuttle materials between cells to deliver a protein called CD24 to the lungs, which Arber has spent decades researching.
This protein is located on the surface of cells and has a well known and important role in regulating the immune system, said researcher Shiran Shapira of Arbers lab.
The protein helps calm down the immune system and curb the storm.
The preparation is inhaled once a day for a few minutes, for five days, Arber said. The preparation is directed straight to the heart of the storm the lungs so unlike other formulas which selectively restrain a certain cytokine, or operate widely but cause many serious side effects, EXO-CD24 is administered locally, works broadly and without side effects.

(2,039 posts)Maddow keeps in the foreground, obviously because of her experience with Susan getting Covid.
Here's part of the transcript of her interview with Dr. Fauci on January 4, 2021:
That`s something that we`re putting a lot of effort in, and when we get that, that will really turn around the entire situation of our ability to prevent someone from progressing and going into a state where they really have advanced disease.
MADDOW: And that`s the sort of theory of the case for the best shot for therapeutics. But is there anything that looks promising along those lines already? Or is this something that`s years away in terms of development?
FAUCI: No. Well, you know, normally under business as usual-type things, it might have been years away. But there are a number of companies that have candidates that they`re looking at, that might look pretty, you know, the companies are a little shy telling you about things, but being at the NIH where we fund scientists who are doing this, I think it`s going to be much sooner than we think.
That once you get something that looks like it`s a hit, as we call it, namely, something that really does act. You get it into a phase one trial quickly and because the situation is so dire in the sense of the need for therapeutics, you move it along. You don`t just want to forget about safety. Safety is always important. But if you can show it`s safe, has good antiviral activity, we can move relatively quickly on that.
And as I mentioned, there are a couple of candidates that are looking promising in the test tube, and then from there you go to an animal model and then get it into humans.
I bet she will have Dr. Fauci back on to discuss this latest development.

(17,946 posts)Any help with one of the worst Covid-19 complications is a godsend. That's great news. But, it's a treatment for a Covid-19 complication, not a cure for Covid-19. You prevent people from contracting viral disease through vaccinations. You can tamp down the impact of viral infection. You can treat complications caused by viral infection. But you cannot cure viral infection Not with present technology.

(672 posts)could "cure" a viral condition through an anti inflammatory effect. We already have meds that treat cytokine storms and not everyone afflicted by covid 19 suffer from these storms. As a cynic, I have to wonder how much of this is hype promoting the country as the hospital chief even mentions how great it would to bring a white and blue cure to the world. I would be just as cynical if some American doctor talked about bringing a red white and blue cure to the world. I hope that Phase II trials with double blind studies confirm their earlier results.
