A good leader can figure out how to keep everybody happy and still reject worst ideas. A good leader doesn't function so in fear for their job that they fret constantly over "the base".
MqQarthy is obviously not one of those people.
A coward with poor judgment, in way over his head.

The Cheneys as the moderate segment of the party? The republican party's situation is terminal---they ought to be put out of everybody's misery, and then start the rebuilding process. That's not going to happen, of course, because intelligence, courage and principles would be needed---and the repubes no longer have any of those valuable attributes. All are punished.
