Senate shapes contours of Trump's second impeachment trial, wrestles with whether to call witnesses

WASHINGTON – Senators agreed Monday on shaping how former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will be conducted, with arguments consuming most of this week and a decision about whether to call witnesses days away.

Democrats have been wrestling with whether to push for a quick trial or include witnesses, which could lengthen the proceedings by weeks or months. Some Democrats want an exhaustive review of the U.S. Capitol riot Jan. 6. But others would prefer to move briskly past the trial, to confirm President Joe Biden’s nominees and work on spending legislation for COVID-19.

The trial is historic in several ways. Trump was the first president to be impeached twice and will be the first to be tried after leaving office. Senators who will be jurors were also witnesses to the insurrection as they evacuated the chamber, which was occupied by rioters.

Also on Monday, Trump's defense team, led by Bruce Castor Jr. and David Schoen, filed a written argument in the case that called the trial unconstitutional and "political theater."

a criminal hearing correct???? Witnesses would be good, but if the Senate does not convict by 2/3's, it will again solidify that the tRump cult will go down. But then again, this cretin will never be able to run again.

The scholars are out tonight on MSNBC.

No justice no peace.

If he had a twitter account, he'd write

"Exonerated... again"

Which would annoy the hell out of me so I'm happy he has no social media.

their vote could be secret, like what they did for Liz Cheney. Repigs are cowards and scared of the Q Base.

Frankly, I'd rather they just get it over with and resume with good governance.

I'm enjoying "No-Drama" Joe...

Call witness, introduce evidence and bring in the most foremost experts. Let us watch the RepubliQans squirm under the glaring light of truth. Give them no quarter.

Imagine, if you will, the Nuremberg trials with almost half of Germany arguing that Hitler and the Nazis didn't really mean any harm.

I want to watch the RepubliQan Trump-apologists in Congress sweating profusely and so obviously uncomfortable as they attempt to co-ordinate their talking points. I hope to see the media skewering their pathetic excuses and the public hammering their offices with outraged calls. I hope to watch the big money support drop off and all right-wing media advertising dry up fast.

The longer we can draw this out the better. Biden and his administration can clearly walk and chew gum at the same time so there is little worry there.

I want the disgraced former POTUS (piece of turd of the US) to lose a fortune in a lengthy Senate trial that will end his and his spawns' dreams of power and privilege at our expense forever.

watching Rachel. McConnell did not want tRump to be tried when he was pResident and now that he is out of office the trial should not take place. Am I correct on that??? McConnell again is not ever to be trusted, up to no good.
