"But for"

Heard Morning Joe mention this.
In Tort cases it is a way to assign responsibility. If something would not have happened "but for" a certain player.

I think it is incontrovertible that the Capitol Riot would not have happened but for Trump's rhetoric and actions.

It's a pretty standard way of identifying liability and culpability.

If it weren't for what person or group of people would this have happened?

The answer to this question with respect to the armed insurrection is obviously, Trump.

Sometimes it's not so great to always be the center of all attention.

Keep this in mind... But, for Trump, would there have been an armed insurrection of homicidal seditionists on the US Capitol building?
