but not the GOP.

They WANT Trump to prevail. They will vote to acquit because they do not care about democracy. They care about POWER. With the GOP no longer interested in policy, the only way to stay relevant is to seize power. And Trump will lead them to an overthrow of government.

I hope I'm wrong, but the GOP's marriage to Trump means that the likelihood of a government overthrow in the next four years is highly likely.

Now I'm hearing that Biden wants to look the other way and his DOJ will likely NOT prosecute Trump. That's dangerous in two ways: the first is obvious, but the second is this: if Trump is not heavily prosecuted, the Dems will LOSE the House and the Senate in the mid-terms. Folks not only voted for Biden; they voted against Trump. Those votes have meaning.

If Biden's supporters discover that Trump will not be prosecuted, they will NOT show up at the polls in 2022. We've seen this before, in 2010, when Obama and Pelosi refused to hold Bush 43's war criminals to account. Obama's passionate supporters walked away and the House fell to the GOP. So did the Senate. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.

(Oops! I just realized that I may have broken a DU rule. My post might get deleted. I really don't know how to reconcile this. I've seen history play out in 2010. I don't mean to be adversarial or critical; rather, I'm just estimating what CAN and likely WILL happen because politics is mostly about passion. And when particular political decisions are made, it can drain that passion until there is nothing left. That's where we are at this moment, IMO.)
