House opens hearing on consulate attack in Libya

11:57AM EST October 10. 2012 - A Republican-led House oversight committee opens hearings Wednesday
on diplomatic security in Benghazi, where a U.S. ambassador and three others were killed on Sept. 11,
adding fuel to a political debate over the issue in the final weeks before presidential elections.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has
accused the State Department of turning aside pleas from its diplomats in Libya to increase security in
the months and weeks before the attack in Benghazi.

House GOP cut embassy security funding by $331 million in fiscal 2012

House Republicans cut the administration’s request for embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011 and $331 million in fiscal 2012. (Negotiations with the Democrat-controlled Senate restored about $88 million of the administration’s request.) Last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Republicans’ proposed cuts to her department would be “detrimental to America’s national security” — a charge Republicans rejected.

Ryan, Issa and other House Republicans voted for an amendment in 2009 to cut $1.2 billion from State operations, including funds for 300 more diplomatic security positions. Under Ryan’s budget, non-defense discretionary spending, which includes State Department funding, would be slashed nearly 20 percent in 2014, which would translate to more than $400 million in additional cuts to embassy security.

What a hypocrite that Issa. He voted for cuts to embassy security and now he holds this hearing. In my opinion that whole anti-muslim film and it's suspicious translation to Arabic just before 9/11 with Arab media being alerted, the protests and attack in Libya, Romney's running out to hold that presser, now this hearing to make the President look bad just before the election, it seems all to coordinated, too Rovian.

What theatre! If only they'd include Democrats, we might get a balanced hearing and learn something.
