(36,055 posts)The footage I've seen before already feels heavier, darker than it has seemed before today.
As they watch, or avoid watching, the 44 had better reconsider their oath of office and their trial oath.
The 44 should screw their courage to the oath sticking test, and trust law enforcement to take care of those they fear after they vote to convict.
I hope that every single one of the 44 who vote 'not guilty' feel the evil of oath breaking they do.

(25,979 posts)It sounds like the insurrectionists came way more prepared than has been generally reported. This wasn't just about baseball bats and pocket knives. Some of them were prepared to murder groups at at time if they could find them.

As riot raged at Capitol, Trump tried to call senators to overturn election
By Sunlen Serfaty, Devan Cole and Alex Rogers, CNN
Updated 9:30 PM ET, Fri January 8, 2021
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump and his attorney Rudy Giuliani both mistakenly made calls to Republican Sen. Mike Lee as deadly riots were unfolding at the US Capitol earlier this week, a spokesman for the senator confirmed to CNN -- calls that were intended for another GOP senator the White House was frantically trying to convince to delay the counting of Electoral College votes.
Lee's spokesman said the calls from Trump and his attorney were intended for Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a newly elected Republican from Alabama.

(25,979 posts)There was no excuse for making such a scene. I will say Leahy's response seemed a bit confused, but that was no reason to berate him that way. It was extremely disrespectful. If Lee was trying to score points, he failed and came off looking like a child.

(4,981 posts)Its one of his specialties, then theres the mean dads in bleachers on his side of the aisle to make extra noise. Its all so gross.
Whew, what a day - Im exhausted, but gosh, the Senators and Managers must be another level of spent.
lindysalsagal
(20,684 posts)The Senate is voting to sustain or object to the chair's decision to refuse to strike Mike Lee's attributions. It doesn't matter. MSNBC is ignoring it and discussing today's events.

Neal Katyal talked about the evidence and said there was real evidence of the commission of crimes by Trump, not just impeachable omission. He felt like Merrick Garland would not have an easy decision about whether or not to investigate Trump.
Sheldon Whitehouse said that when he heard the part about the calls to Tuberville that Trump and Giuliani made, he thought about Trump needing a window of time into which the mob he set upon the Capitol could act. He said if there'd been no objections, the certification might well have been done before the rioters made it to the Capitol. He wondered if any other calls had been made to others in order to delay the proceedings enough to allow the mob time to get to the Capitol and disrupt the vote certification.
