PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- As a shocked Pakistan prayed for her recovery, Malala Yousufzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban for writing a blog about daily life in the war-torn Swat Valley, was still in a critical condition Wednesday after surgery to remove a bullet, her surgeon told NBC News.

Doctors said her head, face and neck started swelling Tuesday night, prompting doctors to call an emergency meeting at 1 a.m. Wednesday (4 p.m. ET) when they decided to operate on her."

Heard about this today. Hope she makes it, and hope someone gets her out of that barbarous hellhole.

4. There was a front page story on this in the Times

today. I read it in disbelief. Some goat-fker spokesman for the Taliban stated that this girl's speaking and blogging for female rights and education was an "obscenity" and that if she recovered they would keep going after her until she is dead.

I fancy myself a tolerant and peaceful person but I must admit to feeling that Pakistan and Afghanistan should simply be walled off from the rest of the world and any male trying to escape be shot on sight and any woman trying to escape be welcomed and given asylum in a decent society. The 12th century barbarians in those dogforsaken shitholes almost - almost - make Saudi Arabia look semi-civilized.

I hope that this poor girl recovers fully and gets the hell out.
